Tile vs Square Footage
Before you can buy tile you need two numbers: the area of the room and the number of tiles that area translates into. The site has one calculator for each step. What each calculator does
The square footage calculator computes area from the shape you choose — length times width for a rectangle, πr² for a circle, or base times height over two for a triangle — after converting dimensions to consistent units. For rectangles it also reports perimeter, and it can multiply the unrounded area by an optional cost per square foot. It does not infer waste or installation quantities; the page notes that irregular boundaries, excluded areas, and measurement tolerance are not inferred, and suggests breaking complex spaces into measured shapes.
The tile calculator divides the room area by the tile face area, applies the selected 10%, 15%, or 20% planning allowance — an input scenario, not a universal installation rule — and rounds up to whole tiles, then to whole boxes from the tiles-per-box entry. It handles metric or imperial units and stresses that actual coverage depends on grout joints, layout, cuts, breakage, and pattern matching, which are product- and project-specific inputs.

When to use which
Use the square footage calculator when you are still measuring — you have a tape measure and a floor plan, not an area. It also earns its keep for the non-tile parts of a project: calculating the area of a triangle of backsplash or a circular section, checking a rectangle’s perimeter for trim, or multiplying area by a per-square-foot price to sanity-check a quote.
Use the tile calculator when you have the room and tile sizes and the question is purchasing. Pick the waste allowance that matches your layout complexity, and note that the chosen percentage is a planning scenario — pattern matching and cuts can change the real count.
