The deck material calculator and the square footage calculator are different steps in planning a deck. Square footage measures the deck’s area in two dimensions. Deck material turns the deck dimensions into a lumber and fastener takeoff: deck boards, joists, beams, posts, screws, railing length, and balusters — with the deck area reported as one row of its own result.
What each calculator does
The square footage calculator computes area from the shape you choose — length times width for a rectangle, π times the radius squared for a circle, or base times height over two for a triangle — after converting dimensions to a common unit. For rectangles it also reports perimeter, and it can multiply the unrounded area by an optional cost per square foot. It does not infer waste or material quantities.
The deck material calculator takes the deck dimensions, the actual board face width, joist spacing, and a waste percentage. Board count spans the deck width and applies waste before a whole-board ceiling; joist count is a spacing-based geometric count from the spacing you enter. In its worked arithmetic a 16 by 12 foot deck with 5/4x6 boards (5.5 inch face), 16 inch joist spacing, and 10 percent waste comes to 29 boards, 12 joists, and a 192.00 square foot deck area.

When to use which
Use the square footage calculator when you are measuring and the answer you need is area: the deck footprint, or any other flat space on the project. It is also the right tool for the non-deck parts of a job, such as a rectangle’s perimeter for trim or an area-times-price check.
Use the deck material calculator when you have the deck dimensions, board, and spacing and the question is how much to order. It is a takeoff, not a design: confirm layout and product requirements separately.
