Tile Calculator

Estimate how many tiles to buy for a rectangular floor or wall area. The calculator supports room measurements in feet with tile dimensions in inches, or room measurements in meters with tile dimensions in centimeters.

How to use this calculator

Choose the measurement system, enter room length and width, enter tile length and width, then choose layout complexity. Results include total tiles to purchase, room area, tile size, tile area, base tiles, and extra tiles from waste.

Formula

The calculator converts each tile to the same area unit as the room:

base tiles=ceiling(room area÷tile area)base\ tiles = ceiling(room\ area \div tile\ area)

total tiles=ceiling(base tiles×(1+waste percent))total\ tiles = ceiling(base\ tiles \times (1 + waste\ percent))

For a 12 ft by 10 ft room using 12 inch by 12 inch tile, room area is 120 sq ft and each tile is 1 sq ft. A moderate 15 percent layout gives 120 base tiles and 138 tiles total.

Layout tips

Use a higher waste factor for diagonal layouts, many corners, or patterned tile. Keep attic stock for repairs because dye lots change. For wall paint around tiled areas, use the paint calculator, and for initial area checks use the square footage calculator.

Frequently asked questions

How many tiles do I need for a room?
Enter room length and width, tile length and width, and layout complexity. The calculator divides room area by tile area, rounds up, then adds waste.
What waste factors are available?
Choose simple layout for 10 percent, moderate layout for 15 percent, or complex layout for 20 percent.
Can I use metric tile measurements?
Yes. Choose meters for the room and centimeters for tile dimensions.
Does it round tile quantities up?
Yes. Base tiles are rounded up first, and total tiles with waste are rounded up again.
