The brick calculator and the square footage calculator serve two different moments in a masonry project. Square footage answers “how big is the wall?” — a measured area in square feet. Brick answers “how many bricks do I buy?” — a whole-brick purchase count built from that area, the brick-and-mortar module, an opening deduction, and a waste allowance. The brick page says the same thing directly: to measure the wall area first, use the square footage calculator.

What each calculator does

The square footage calculator computes area from the shape you choose — length times width for a rectangle, π times the radius squared for a circle, or base times height over two for a triangle — after converting dimensions to a common unit. For rectangles it also reports perimeter, and it can multiply the unrounded area by an optional cost per square foot. It does not subtract openings, and it does not infer waste or installation quantities.

The brick calculator takes the gross wall dimensions, a single rectangular opening, all three brick dimensions, mortar-joint thickness, and a waste percentage. It subtracts the opening from the gross area, divides the net face area by the entered brick-and-joint module, applies waste, and rounds up to whole bricks; row counts use the gross wall geometry. It also estimates mortar volume as the net wall volume at the entered brick depth minus the unrounded brick volume. In its worked arithmetic a 20 by 8 foot wall with a 3 by 4 foot opening, 8 by 2.25 by 3.625 inch bricks, a 0.375 inch joint, and 10 percent waste comes to 1,067 bricks — 970 base bricks plus 97 waste bricks — with 29 bricks per row, 37 rows, and about 8.10 cubic feet of mortar.

When to use which

Use the square footage calculator while you are still measuring: you have a tape measure and a wall, not an area. It also covers the non-masonry parts of a project — a circular section, a triangle of gable, a rectangle’s perimeter for trim, or an area-times-price sanity check.

Use the brick calculator when you have the wall and brick sizes and the question is purchasing. Pick the joint thickness and waste that match your brick and layout, and remember that bond pattern, cuts, breakage, and openings beyond the single entered rectangle need a project takeoff. Limits and disclaimer

Both pages are educational planning tools, not installation instructions. The square footage result is a gross geometric area with no allowance for openings or waste. The brick count depends on the module, joint, and waste you enter and assumes a rectangular wall with a single opening; product dimensions and field conditions vary, and qualified trades and adopted codes control safety-critical work.

In its worked arithmetic a 20 by 8 foot wall with a 3 by 4 foot opening is 160 square feet gross and 148 square feet net, yet at a 10 percent waste it works out to 1,067 whole bricks — the count includes module coverage, waste, and whole-brick rounding.
Does the square footage calculator subtract windows or doors from a wall?
No. It measures the gross shape and does not infer openings, excluded areas, or waste. The brick calculator subtracts a single rectangular opening from the gross wall area before dividing by the brick-and-joint module; openings beyond that one rectangle need a separate project takeoff.
