Roof pitch and square footage are the two numbers people actually measure when they want to estimate roofing materials: how steep the roof is, and how big its plan is. The roof pitch calculator describes slope — the rise-per-run ratio, angle, or percentage. The square footage calculator measures the flat area of each plane. The roofing calculator needs both, applying the pitch as a surface-area multiplier to the plan dimensions, which is why the two pages point at each other.
What each calculator does
The roof pitch calculator converts among the three ways of stating a slope. From any one of rise and run, angle, or slope percentage it derives the others: the pitch ratio is the normalized rise per 12 inches of run, the angle is the arctangent of rise over run, and the slope percentage is 100 × rise ÷ run. For the article’s worked example, a 6-inch rise over a 12-inch run becomes 6:12, 26.57 degrees, and 50.0 percent. The output is pure geometry — the page explicitly does not determine covering suitability, drainage, structural capacity, or code compliance.
The square footage calculator computes area from entered dimensions: length times width for rectangles, π times the radius squared for circles, and base times height divided by 2 for triangles, converting units first. It also reports perimeter for rectangles and an optional cost per square foot. When to use which
Use the roof pitch calculator when your question is “how steep is this roof” — you have rise and run from a rafter or framing plan, or an angle or percentage, and you want the slope stated in the other forms, including the X:12 ratio that roofing conventions use. Its result is the input the roofing calculator needs for its surface-area multiplier.
Use the square footage calculator when your question is “how much area” — you have measured dimensions and want the flat plan area of each section before materials. It is the natural first step for a roof you have not measured yet, and its output feeds the roofing calculator’s sections directly. For a complete takeoff you will typically use both: square footage for the plane measurements and roof pitch for the slope.
