Brick Calculator

Estimate brick quantities for a rectangular masonry wall, including mortar joint thickness and a waste allowance. The calculator supports wall measurements in feet or meters while brick length, brick height, and mortar joint thickness remain in inches.

How to use this calculator

Choose feet or meters, enter wall length and wall height, then enter brick length, brick height, mortar joint thickness, and wastage percentage. Results include total bricks needed, wall area, mortar required, bricks per row, number of rows, base bricks, and waste bricks. For related layout areas, compare with the square footage calculator.

Formula

The calculator treats each brick as its face size plus the mortar joint:

bricks per row=ceiling(wall length÷(brick length+joint))bricks\ per\ row = ceiling(wall\ length \div (brick\ length + joint))

rows=ceiling(wall height÷(brick height+joint))rows = ceiling(wall\ height \div (brick\ height + joint))

For a 20 ft by 8 ft wall, 8 inch by 2.25 inch bricks, a 0.375 inch joint, and 10 percent waste, the layout gives 34 bricks per row and 37 rows. That is 1,258 base bricks plus 126 waste bricks, or 1,384 bricks total.

Estimating materials

Order whole bricks, then confirm openings, corners, bond pattern, and local masonry details. Mortar is an estimate based on wall area, joint thickness, and an extra 10 percent allowance. If the wall is part of a larger hardscape, the concrete calculator can help with footings or pads.

Frequently asked questions

How many bricks do I need for a wall?
Enter wall length, wall height, brick size, mortar joint thickness, and waste percentage. The calculator returns base bricks, waste bricks, rows, bricks per row, and total bricks.
Does the brick calculator include mortar joints?
Yes. It adds the mortar joint thickness to brick length and height when estimating rows and bricks per row.
What waste percentage should I use for bricks?
A 10 percent waste allowance is a common starting point for cuts, breakage, and layout changes, but complex patterns may need more.
Can I enter wall measurements in meters?
Yes. Choose meters for wall length and height while keeping brick dimensions and mortar thickness in inches.
