What each calculator does

The concrete calculator computes shape volume in cubic feet for slabs, columns, tubes, curbs, and stairs, applies the entered waste allowance once, and converts to cubic yards by dividing by 27. Bags are rounded up only after dividing the adjusted volume by the yield per bag you enter, and the estimated dry-mix weight is that whole-bag count times the entered bag weight. In the article’s worked example, a 10 by 10 foot slab at 4 inches is 33.33 cubic feet, becoming 36.67 cubic feet at 10 percent waste — 1.36 cubic yards, 62 bags at a 0.6 cubic foot yield, and about 4,960 lb of dry mix.

The deck material calculator estimates deck boards, joists, beams, posts, screws, railing length, balusters, and waste. Board count spans the deck width and applies the entered waste before a whole-board ceiling, using the actual board face width you enter; joist count is a spacing-based geometric count from the joist spacing you enter. In its worked example, a 16 by 12 foot deck with 5/4×6 boards (5.5 inch face), 16-inch joist spacing, and 10 percent waste comes to 29 boards, 12 joists, and 192 sq ft of deck area.
