What to enter
- Measured area in square feet and selected depth in inches.
- A positive bulk density in pounds per cubic foot, with its density, moisture, and product basis.
- A nonnegative waste allowance for the scenario.
- A positive package weight in pounds per bag from the product information you are using.
- The density method or product label/version and an uncertainty range for area, depth, density, and package quantity.
Bulk density, moisture basis, package weight, and waste are user-supplied scenario values. No density, application depth, or product is recommended.
Method and variable definitions
Let A be area in ft^2, d depth in inches, w entered waste percentage, ρ entered bulk density in lb/ft^3, and p entered package weight in pounds.
The adjusted volume is displayed in cubic yards using 1 yd^3=27 ft^3. Scenario weight is displayed in short tons using 2,000 lb per ton. Whole packages are rounded up only after the unrounded adjusted volume and weight are calculated.
Worked order example
For 300 ft^2 at 6 in with zero added waste:
That is 150/27=5.555556… yd^3, displayed as 5.56 yd³. With an entered density of 75 lb/ft^3, the scenario weight is:
The displayed weight is 5.63 tons. At an entered package weight of 40 lb, ceil(11,250/40)=ceil(281.25)=282 whole packages.

If the density and package label refer to different materials or moisture conditions, do not combine them as though they shared one basis.
Interpret the estimate
The cubic-yard result represents the entered geometry and waste allowance. The ton result is conditional on the entered bulk density; it is not a universal weight for topsoil. The package count is conditional on both that density and the entered package weight.
Actual quantity can differ because area, depth, bulk density, moisture, compaction, and package fill vary. Treat low and high input values as scenarios, not confidence intervals. Zero area or depth can produce zero volume, but density and package weight must remain positive. Blank provenance, basis, or uncertainty fields, negatives where prohibited, unsupported values, and invalid numeric entries do not produce an estimate.
Practical next step
Confirm the measured dimensions, then obtain density/moisture information and package weight for the specific product. Save those values beside the result. If density is uncertain, rerun the estimate across the documented range before comparing the whole-package quantity with the supplier’s packaging.
