Ladder Safety Calculator

Calculate the proper ladder length and setup angle for safe use. Determine the correct ladder placement and height for your project.

Recommended ladder size
Recommended ladder size
16.0 feet
Minimum required length
15.46 feet
Setup distance from wall
3.75 feet
Optimal angle
75.5°
Safety guidelines
Maintain a 4:1 setup ratio (3.8 feet from wall); Ensure the extension ladder extends 3 feet above the landing surface; Secure the base on level, firm ground; Face the ladder when climbing; Lock extension ladder sections before climbing

Extension ladders preserve the original 3-foot clearance and 4:1 setup ratio.

Ladder Safety Calculator

Find a recommended ladder size and setup distance for extension ladders or stepladders. The calculator accepts the height to reach in feet or meters and returns recommended ladder size, minimum required length, setup distance, angle, and safety reminders.

How to use this calculator

Choose feet or meters, select extension ladder or stepladder, and enter the height from the ground to the work surface. Extension ladder results include base distance from the wall and angle. Stepladder results skip wall distance because the ladder is used open in A-frame position.

How it works

For extension ladders, the calculator adds 3 ft above the landing surface and uses a 4 to 1 setup ratio:

setup distance=required height÷4setup\ distance = required\ height \div 4

For a 12 ft reach height, required height is 15 ft, setup distance is 3.75 ft, and ladder length is about 15.46 ft. The calculator rounds that to a standard 16 ft ladder.

Safety reminders

Use this as a sizing aid only. Keep the base level, lock ladder sections, face the ladder, and keep your body centered between the rails. For exterior projects, pair ladder planning with the roofing calculator or paint calculator so material handling is planned before climbing.

Frequently asked questions

What is the 4 to 1 ladder rule?
For extension ladders, place the base 1 foot from the wall for every 4 feet of working height. The calculator uses this setup ratio.
How far should an extension ladder extend above a roof?
The calculator includes 3 feet of clearance above the landing surface for extension ladders.
How tall should a stepladder be?
For stepladders, the calculator subtracts 4 feet from the height to reach and rounds up to a standard ladder size.
What ladder angle does the calculator recommend?
For extension ladders, it reports an optimal setup angle of about 75.5 degrees.
