Method and variable definitions

Let A be area in ft^2, d be depth in inches, w be the entered waste percentage, and y be the entered bag yield in ft^3/bag.

The adjusted volume is displayed in cubic yards using 1 yd^3=27 ft^3. The base volume is also shown in cubic yards. Bag count B is rounded up only after waste is applied; the continuous volumes are not rounded before that step.

Worked purchase example

For a measured 200 ft^2 bed, a selected depth of 3 in gives:

200×312=50 ft3200\times\frac{3}{12}=50\ \text{ft}^3

With an entered waste allowance of 10%, the adjusted volume is 50×1.10=55 ft^3, or 55/27=2.037037… yd^3. The displayed adjusted volume is 2.04 yd³, while the base volume is 1.85 yd³. If the product label states 2 ft^3 per bag, ceil(55/2)=28 whole bags.

Compare the package yield before buying

The same 55 ft³ requirement produces different purchase counts when the entered label yield changes:

This table changes only the package yield. It does not assert that either package size is available or that its stated yield applies to a particular bed.

Interpret the estimate

The adjusted cubic-yard result answers how much volume the entered geometry and waste scenario represent. The whole-bag result answers how many complete bags are needed at the entered yield. Compare that yield with the exact product label rather than treating a bag as a standard volume.

Area boundaries, depth variation, settlement, product coverage, and the label yield can all move the real quantity. Treat an entered uncertainty range as a sensitivity range, not a confidence interval. Zero area or depth can produce zero volume, but bag yield must be positive; blank provenance or uncertainty fields, unsupported values, negatives, and invalid numeric entries do not produce a quantity.

Practical next step

Recheck the bed dimensions and depth, record the product label/version and yield, then compare the whole-bag count with the package actually sold. Frequently asked questions

How is mulch volume calculated?
Base volume in cubic feet is area × depth in inches ÷ 12. The adjusted volume then applies the entered waste percentage, and bag count is ceil(adjusted volume ÷ bag yield). For a 200 ft² bed at 3 inches with 10% waste, the adjusted volume is 55 ft³.
Why is the bag count rounded up?
Whole bags are computed only after waste is applied, using an explicit upward ceiling because you buy complete bags. With 55 ft³ needed and a 2 ft³ label yield, ceil(55 ÷ 2) = 28 bags; the continuous volumes are not rounded before that step.
Where does the bag yield come from?
The bag yield in cubic feet per bag is a value you enter from the product information you are using. The page does not infer or recommend a yield, so compare the entered value with the exact product label rather than treating a bag as a standard volume.
