Stride Length vs Vertical Speed
A runner on flat ground and a hiker on a climb are measuring different kinds of movement. The stride length calculator and the vertical speed calculator are both Sports & Performance tools that turn raw movement measurements into a single number, but the number answers a different question: how much horizontal ground each step covers, versus how fast you gain or lose elevation. The genuine choice is which quantity your measurement setup can support — a measured distance with counted steps, or a signed vertical distance with elapsed time — and both calculators stay deliberately narrow, reporting only what the entered values support.
What each calculator does
The stride length calculator takes a measured distance and repeated counted-step trials. Each trial length equals the measured distance divided by the counted steps for that trial; the first trial is the central display and all trials define the observed range. In the article’s worked example, over 10 m, counts of 14, 13, and 15 steps give 0.71 m/step for trial 1 and an observed range of 0.67–0.77 m/step. The range describes only the trials you entered — it is not an individualized gait, performance, or injury recommendation.
The vertical speed calculator takes a signed vertical distance in meters or feet and an elapsed time in minutes and seconds. It converts the distance exactly — the international foot is 0.3048 meter — divides by raw elapsed time, and reports neutral per-second, per-minute, and per-hour rates. Positive and negative values indicate direction only. Terrain, horizontal distance, pauses, and personal capability are outside the calculation, and a nonzero rate whose supported fixed-precision values would all round to zero is reported as too small to display rather than as a zero result.

When to use which
Use the stride length calculator when you can measure a known distance and count steps across repeated trials, and the quantity you want is ground covered per step — for example, comparing stride consistency across sessions. Keep the measurement protocol consistent so trials stay comparable. Use the vertical speed calculator when you have a vertical gain or loss and a time — for example, the elevation change of a route divided by the time you expect to spend — and want a planning rate. Both are narrow tools: the stride result describes only the entered trials, and the vertical speed result is a neutral rate with direction but no performance claim.
