What each calculator does

The swimming speed calculator takes a swim distance and elapsed seconds. Average speed is distance divided by elapsed time, converted to meters per second; pace per 100 meters is 100 divided by that speed. A pool length you enter is used to report equivalent lengths, which may be fractional, and projections apply the same average pace to the whole distance without adjusting for stroke. Starts, turns, rests, pool measurement, and timing method count only insofar as they are present in the elapsed time you enter.

The vertical speed calculator takes a signed vertical distance and elapsed minutes and seconds. It converts the distance exactly — feet are multiplied by 0.3048 to obtain meters, and meters are divided by 0.3048 to obtain feet — then divides by the raw elapsed time and reports neutral per-second, per-minute, and per-hour rates. A nonzero rate whose supported fixed-precision values would all round to zero is reported as too small to display rather than as a zero, and zero elapsed time triggers a validation message.
