This one starts from your chosen weekly loss target — say 0.5 kg per week — and derives both the daily calories and the weeks-to-goal projection from it.
What the calculator estimates
The form asks for sex, age, height, weight, an activity level, a weekly loss target in kilograms, and a goal weight. The primary result is the daily calorie target: the estimated intake that produces your weekly deficit. Supporting results show the estimated TDEE, the weekly calorie deficit, the estimated number of weeks to the goal, and the total weight to lose.
The starting scenario is a 30-year-old man, 178 cm, 75 kg, moderately active, targeting 0.5 kg/week down to 70 kg. That produces a daily target of 2,112 calories and a 10-week timeline.

The activity factors are standard conventions: sedentary 1.2, lightly active 1.375, moderately active 1.55, very active 1.725, and extra active 1.9. Interpreting the timeline
The timeline answers a “what if” question: if a consistent deficit equivalent to 0.5 kg/week were maintained, and if energy use stayed constant, the goal would be reached in about 10 weeks. Both conditions are approximations.
The 7,700 calories/kg figure (the metric form of the familiar 3,500 calories/lb rule) is a simplified convention. Hall’s 2008 analysis of energy balance found that the deficit actually required per unit of weight loss varies with initial body fat and changes as weight is lost — leaner people generally need a larger deficit per kilogram than the rule predicts, and the rate of loss slows as you get closer to your goal. The NIDDK Body Weight Planner models these dynamics instead of assuming a fixed ratio, which is why its projections often look more conservative than a linear calculation.
The calculator flags any daily target below 1,000 calories. The NIDDK planner similarly will not recommend an intake below 1,000 calories per day. If your inputs produce such a target, lower the weekly loss rate or the gap to the goal weight — and treat any very low intake as a reason to involve a professional, not to push through.
Tips for using the timeline
- Pick a weekly rate you could plausibly sustain: 0.25–0.5 kg/week is a common planning range, while 1 kg/week produces a large deficit and a very low target for many people.
- Re-run the calculator after losing the first few kilograms. Because energy use falls as weight drops, the same intake produces less loss later; the timeline is a starting estimate, not a guarantee.

Common pitfalls
- Treating the timeline as a promise: the fixed 7,700 kcal/kg ratio overestimates loss rate for many people, especially as they get leaner.
- Choosing a weekly loss rate that produces a target below 1,000 calories/day and ignoring the warning.
- Using a goal weight above or equal to current weight, which the calculator rejects because it would not be a weight-loss timeline.
- Adding an activity factor on top of already-active daily life without adjusting expectations — the factors are conventions, and overestimating activity inflates the TDEE.
- Forgetting that BMR and TDEE are estimates with individual variation; body composition, medications, and medical conditions can shift real energy needs.
