Daily Water Intake Calculator
This calculator turns the vague question “how much water should I drink?” into a concrete daily target. It starts from the National Academies’ adequate intake (AI) for total water — 3.7 L/day for adult men and 2.7 L/day for adult women — scales those reference values to your body weight, then adds an allowance for exercise. The result is shown in liters per day, milliliters per day, and cups.
The number is a planning target, not a strict prescription. Thirst, urine color, meals, weather, sweat rate, and health status all matter more than any formula. The value of a calculator here is giving you a defensible starting point instead of a random number.
What the calculator does

How it works
The National Academies’ AI values are population references for healthy adults in temperate climates, covering total water — from drinking water, other beverages, and food. They were derived from observed intakes of reference adults weighing about 70 kg (men) and 57 kg (women). This calculator scales linearly from those reference weights to the weight you enter.
The exercise add-on uses a common planning rule of 0.35 L per 30 minutes of exercise (about 0.7 L per hour). That rate sits inside the American College of Sports Medicine’s guidance to consume roughly 0.4–0.8 L of fluid per hour during exercise, at the higher end — sensible for moderate-to-vigorous sessions and easy to adjust down or up with sweat rate and heat.

Interpreting the estimate
The biggest caveat is that the AI is total water, not plain drinking water. In the reference data, food contributes roughly 0.7 L/day for men and 0.5 L/day for women, so a plain-water-only target would be lower than the numbers shown. The estimate also assumes temperate conditions; hot or humid weather, heavy sweating, high altitude, pregnancy, breastfeeding, and illness can all push needs up, while some medical conditions require restricting fluids entirely.

Tips for using the result

- Space intake across the day instead of chugging it; the target is daily, not per sitting.
- Add electrolytes or salty foods after long, heavy sweating; plain water alone may not replace the sodium you lose.
