What does the A-a gradient measure?
It compares calculated alveolar oxygen pressure with measured arterial oxygen pressure. A wider gap means less oxygen is reaching arterial blood than expected from the oxygen available in the lungs, but the number must be interpreted with the blood gas, oxygen setting, altitude, and clinical context.
What values does this calculator need?
the calculator uses age, FiO2, arterial carbon dioxide pressure, arterial oxygen pressure, and atmospheric pressure. It assumes water vapor pressure is 47 mmHg and respiratory quotient is 0.8, matching the calculation in the calculator rather than adjusting those constants.
Can venous blood gas oxygen be used?
No. The gradient subtracts measured arterial oxygen pressure, so a venous oxygen value is not interchangeable. Venous samples may help with acid base status in selected settings, but they do not provide the arterial oxygen pressure needed for this calculation.
