What it doesCalculate running pace, elapsed time, or distance in miles or kilometers using exact unit conversion.Convert speed among km/h, mph, m/s, and knots with a multi-unit hub for driving, aviation, marine navigation, running, weather, and physics.

Pace and speed describe the same motion from opposite directions. Pace is the time it takes to cover one unit of distance — minutes per mile or per kilometer. Speed is the distance covered per unit of time — kilometers per hour, miles per hour, meters per second, or knots. The Running Pace Calculator solves pace, elapsed time, or distance for running in miles or kilometers. The Speed Converter converts a single speed value among km/h, mph, m/s, and knots. One answers “how long does this distance take?”; the other answers “how fast is this value in another unit?”

What each calculator does

The Running Pace Calculator lets you choose which quantity to solve — pace, elapsed time, or distance — and enter the other two, in either miles or kilometers. It works in raw seconds and uses the exact international mile conversion of 1 mile = 1.609344 kilometers to report the distance in the alternate unit. Its checked example solves pace for a 3.1-mile run in 30 minutes: 1,800 seconds divided by 3.1 miles is about 580.6 seconds per mile, displayed as 9:41 per mile, with the per-kilometer reading of 6:01 shown alongside. Pace and time displays round to the nearest whole second, and only at the final step — intermediate values are not rounded.

The Speed Converter asks for a value, a from unit, and a to unit among km/h, mph, m/s, and knots. The primary result shows the selected conversion rounded to two decimal places, and the result panel also lists the same speed in all four supported units. Most conversions run through km/h — mph × 1.609344, m/s × 3.6, and knots × 1.852 — with a few direct factors for knot directions. Its default converts 100 km/h to 62.14 mph, with reference rows showing 100.00 km/h, 27.78 m/s, and 54.00 kts.

When to use which

Use the Running Pace Calculator when your question is about a run: what pace produces a target finish time, what time a training pace predicts, or what distance a given pace and time covers. It stays in per-distance time — minutes per mile or per kilometer — which is the unit runners plan in, and it converts distance between miles and kilometers using the exact international mile.

Use the Speed Converter when you already have a speed and need it in another unit or another domain: a weather report in knots that has to be discussed with a driver, a physics value in m/s that needs a public km/h comparison, or an aircraft or vessel speed in knots. It is the multi-unit hub, showing the same value in all four units at once.

The two work together: convert a raw speed with the speed converter, and if you have a per-distance pace and want km/h or mph, the Pace Converter Calculator performs that reciprocal conversion — the Running Pace Calculator itself keeps everything in per-distance time.

Limits and disclaimer

Both pages are educational tools, not coaching or medical advice. The Running Pace Calculator ignores stops, course measurement, terrain, and conditions — it only applies the pace, time, and distance relationship, and it rejects zero distances or times. The Speed Converter rounds displays to two decimals, treats knots as nautical miles per hour (a nautical mile is longer than a statute mile), and is not a fuel-economy tool — MPG and L/100km are reciprocal efficiency measures, not linear speed units. Both calculators rely on the exact international mile of 1.609344 km, and the converter additionally uses the international nautical mile of 1.852 km for knots.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between pace and speed?
Pace is time per unit of distance, shown as minutes per mile or minutes per kilometer. Speed is distance per unit of time, shown as km/h, mph, m/s, or knots. They are reciprocals: a 6-minute kilometer is 10 km/h, because 60 divided by 6 equals 10. The running pace calculator works in per-distance time, while the speed converter works in distance-per-time units.
Which calculator should I use for a running question?
Use the running pace calculator when the question is pace, elapsed time, or distance for a run in miles or kilometers. Use the speed converter when you need to translate a speed between units — a wind report in knots, a physics value in m/s, or a treadmill setting in mph. The speed converter's own FAQ notes that runners usually prefer pace, and the pace converter calculator converts between min/km, min/mile, km/h, and mph when you need both.
Can I enter a pace like 9:41 per mile into the speed converter?
No. The speed converter accepts only speed units — km/h, mph, m/s, and knots — so a per-distance pace must be converted first. The pace converter calculator handles the reciprocal conversion between min/km or min/mile and km/h or mph; the running pace calculator keeps its results in per-distance time.
