The speed converter is the hub for changing a velocity among four common units: kilometers per hour, miles per hour, meters per second, and knots. Those units overlap in daily life but come from different domains. Road signs and car dashboards use km/h or mph. Physics and engineering calculations prefer m/s. Aviation, boating, marine forecasts, and many wind reports use knots. This page lets you translate one measurement into the others without opening a separate calculator for each pair.

Supported units
Kilometers per hour, km/h, reports how many kilometers are traveled in one hour. It is common for road traffic, cycling computers, rail speeds, and public weather summaries in many countries.
Miles per hour, mph, reports statute miles traveled in one hour. It is the familiar road-speed unit in the United States and the United Kingdom.
Meters per second, m/s, reports meters traveled in one second. It is the coherent SI speed unit and is well suited to physics, robotics, wind loading, fluid flow, and short timing intervals.
Knots, displayed as kts in this calculator, mean nautical miles per hour. Knots tie speed to nautical navigation, which is why aircraft, vessels, and marine weather often use them.
Conversion method
The calculator generally converts the source value to km/h first and then converts from km/h to the target unit. It also includes direct directional factors for a few knot-related paths so the output matches the original converter’s behavior.
For knots, the calculator uses 1.852 km/h per knot through the km/h path, plus direct factors of 1.15078 mph per knot, 0.868976 knots per mph, and 1.94384 knots per m/s for those selected directions.

The table illustrates why no single unit fits every audience. A runner might recognize 10 m/s as elite sprint speed, a driver may understand 36 km/h faster, and a sailor may care about the knot equivalent only when wind or boat speed is involved.
Domains
In driving, choose km/h or mph according to the road system and keep the result rounded for readability. In aviation, use knots for operational airspeed and wind, then convert only for explanation or comparison. In marine work, knots pair with nautical miles on charts and route plans. In physics, m/s avoids hidden unit conversions when equations use meters, seconds, kilograms, and newtons. In running and cycling, speed can be useful for comparing performances, but pace may be easier for workouts. In weather, wind may be issued in knots, m/s, km/h, or mph depending on the agency and audience.
Pitfalls
- Do not treat knots as mph. A nautical mile is longer than a statute mile.
- Do not confuse m/s with milliseconds; the slash marks a speed unit.
- Do not mix rounded values in a chain of calculations. Convert from the original value whenever possible.
- Do not assume the largest number means the fastest unit. The same speed has a larger km/h value than m/s because hours are much longer than seconds.
- Do not use this speed converter for fuel economy. MPG and L/100km are reciprocal-style efficiency measures, not linear speed units.
