UV Exposure Level Calculator
The UV exposure level calculator turns three simple inputs — today’s UV index, the minutes you plan to spend outdoors, and your skin type — into a relative exposure score and a low-to-very-high exposure level. It is built on the same UV index that weather services publish daily, combined with duration and skin sensitivity, so you can compare one sun scenario against another before heading out.
The score is deliberately a heuristic: UV index × minutes × skin-type factor. It is a planning aid for comparing situations, not a measurement of the UV dose your skin receives and not a predictor of sunburn. For real decisions, the day’s UV index and official sun safety guidance are the right basis.
What the inputs mean
- UV index — the standard international measure of UV radiation intensity, from 0 at night to 11+ in extreme conditions. It is highest around solar noon and at lower latitudes and higher altitudes.
- Minutes outdoors — how long you expect to be in the sun, roughly around midday when the UV index is at its peak.
- Skin type (Fitzpatrick I–VI) — a classification of how easily skin burns: type I burns almost always, type VI essentially never. The calculator weights lighter types more heavily because the same sun is more stressful to them.
How it works
The relative score is:
The skin-type factors run from 2.0 for type I down to 0.5 for type VI. They are relative weights for this heuristic — the classification systems that describe skin sensitivity do not publish a single factor table, so the multipliers are clearly labeled as such rather than presented as science.
The exposure level then comes from the score:

The result also shows the official UV index band for the value you entered, using the World Health Organization / EPA categories: 0–2 low, 3–5 moderate, 6–7 high, 8–10 very high, and 11+ extreme. That band carries the protection actions the guidance mirrors.
Worked example
On a day with a UV index of 6, 30 minutes outdoors, and medium (type III) skin:
A score of 180 falls in the 150–299 band, so the exposure level is High. The UV index 6 itself falls in the EPA High (6–7) band, and the guidance reads: apply broad-spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen, wear protective clothing and a hat, and limit time in direct sun around midday.
Now compare: the same 30 minutes at a UV index of 2 with very fair (type I) skin:
That is only Moderate — the low UV index outweighs the high sensitivity. Duration matters too: 2 hours at UV index 11 with type I skin gives 11 × 120 × 2.0 = 2,640, squarely Very high. This is the kind of comparison the tool is for.
How to read the result
The primary number is the relative score. The exposure level puts it in words, the UV index band anchors it to the official scale, and the skin-type factor line reminds you which multiplier was applied. The guidance text mirrors the protection actions that health agencies attach to UV exposure.
Remember what the tool does not do: it does not calculate UV dose in joules per square meter, does not account for time of day, latitude, altitude, clouds, reflection off snow or water, or clothing coverage, and it does not predict individual burn times. Two people with the same score can respond very differently.
Tips
- Check the day’s UV index forecast before planning outdoor time; it peaks near midday.
- Treat the score as a comparison tool: shorten the planned time, move earlier or later in the day, or add shade when the level jumps.
- Use the UV index band guidance as the practical action list — it comes from health agencies, not from this heuristic.
- Remember reflection: snow, sand, and water increase the UV reaching you beyond the index reading.
- Sunscreen is one layer; shade, clothing, hats, and sunglasses matter as much.
Common pitfalls
- Assuming the score predicts sunburn — it does not, and it is labeled as a heuristic.
- Entering the temperature forecast instead of the UV index.
- Forgetting that UV index 11+ is extreme and occurs in real places, especially at altitude.
- Using the skin factor to justify skipping protection for darker skin types; skin cancer and eye damage affect everyone.
- Treating a cloudy-day reading as zero UV; clouds reduce but do not eliminate UV.
