The study time calculator answers “how should I spend the study time I have?” — it builds focus sessions, short and long breaks, and review time inside your available hours. One measures a text; the other plans a session. For coursework they fit together: estimate the reading first, then schedule it as part of a realistic study block.
What each calculator does
The Reading Time Calculator starts from word count, a words-per-minute reading speed, and content type. The default 250 wpm is an editable publisher planning scenario, not a measured benchmark. Content type changes effective speed: fiction or narrative uses 120 percent of the entered pace, technical content 60 percent, academic papers 50 percent, and poetry or complex text 40 percent. Estimated time is word count divided by effective speed; approximate pages are the ceiling of word count divided by 250. The page estimate rounds the displayed minutes, so very short texts should be treated as planning estimates rather than stopwatch predictions.
The Study Time Calculator starts from available hours, a study method, subject complexity, and energy level. The method provides a base session length, short break, long break, and number of sessions before a long break: Pomodoro is 25 minutes with 5 minute breaks and a 20 minute long break after four sessions, the 52/17 method uses 52 and 17, 90 minute focus blocks use 90 and 20, and a custom option accepts your own lengths. Complexity and energy adjust session and break lengths, the calculator fits only complete cycles into the available time, and review time is 20 percent of actual active study time, rounded to the nearest minute, reported as a separate block rather than folded into the session count.

Use the reading time calculator when a specific text is the unit of planning: an article, a chapter, a report, a manuscript, or a speech. Choose the content type that matches how you will actually process the material — skimming headlines will finish faster than the estimate, while annotating, checking citations, or solving embedded examples will take longer. If accuracy matters, replace the default pace with a timed five-minute sample of your own reading. The page estimate uses 250 words per page, which may not match the layout of a specific book or PDF.
Use the study time calculator when you have a block of time and need a plan that survives real conditions. Choose shorter sessions for new equations, dense reading, or difficult problem sets, and longer focus blocks for writing, coding, or practice tests where switching costs are high. Because the calculator counts only complete cycles, some available time is intentionally left unused — that margin covers setup, review, and transitions. Treat the 20 percent review recommendation as a real block for summarizing and checking recall, and do not confuse available time with active learning time.
