These two calculators answer the same planning question — how long will this book take me? — from two different measurements. Audiobook time starts from the recorded length chosen by the publisher and narrator and divides it by your playback speed. Reading time starts from a word count and divides it by an effective words-per-minute pace adjusted for the kind of material. Neither is a substitute for the other, and each article explicitly points to the other as the different tool.

Its default example is an 8 hour 30 minute book at 1.5×: 510 minutes ÷ 1.5 = 340 minutes, or 5 hours 40 minutes of listening, with 5-minute breaks every 60 minutes adding 25 minutes for a 6 hour 5 minute total and 170 minutes saved.

The reading time calculator takes a word count, a base words-per-minute speed, and a content type. The content type modifies the effective speed — fiction or narrative 1.20, technical content 0.60, academic papers 0.50, poetry or complex text 0.40 — and the calculator divides the word count by that effective speed. It also reports approximate pages as the ceiling of word count divided by 250. Its default example is 1,000 words at 250 wpm in fiction: effective speed 300 wpm, reading time 3.33 minutes displayed as 3 minutes, and 4 approximate pages.

Use the audiobook speed calculator when your time comes in recorded minutes — a title sold by total hours, a chapter with a known length, a commute that must fit a listening block. Playback speed changes the schedule quickly: 10 hours at 1.25× becomes 8 hours, at 1.5× becomes 6 hours 40 minutes, and at 2.0× becomes 5 hours before breaks. But use the fastest speed that still leaves the book understandable — dense history, language learning, or anything you plan to quote may call for 1.0× to 1.25×.

Use the reading time calculator when your material is text — an article, chapter, report, newsletter, manuscript, or speech — and you know or can estimate the word count. Choose a content type that matches how you will actually read: careful study of technical or academic material should not use a skimming pace. The page also suggests measuring your own words-per-minute with a five-minute timed sample when accuracy matters, and adding time for highlighting, copying quotes, checking footnotes, and writing summaries.
