The pace converter expresses a speed you already have in different units — minutes per kilometer, minutes per mile, kilometers per hour, or miles per hour — using the exact international mile conversion. The stride length calculator starts from a measured distance and counted-step trials and reports how much ground each step covers. The genuine choice is which number your run data supports: a pace or speed to convert between unit systems, or a gait measurement from a measured course and counted steps.

What each calculator does

Pace and speed are reciprocals, and every conversion runs through exactly 1 mile = 1.609344 kilometers and its reciprocal — in the article’s example, 5.5 min/km converts to 8:51 min/mile, with companion rows of 10.91 km/h and 17.56 mph. Time displays round only at the final second; intermediate values are not rounded.
The stride length calculator takes a measured distance and repeated counted-step trials. Each trial length equals the measured distance divided by the counted steps for that trial; the first trial is the central display and all trials define the observed range. In the article’s worked example, over 10 m, counts of 14, 13, and 15 steps give 0.71 m/step for trial 1 and an observed range of 0.67–0.77 m/step. The range describes only the trials you entered.
