What each calculator does

The glycemic index calculator takes a glucose-scale GI value, available carbohydrate per serving, and servings. It computes serving glycemic load as GI × available carbohydrate × servings ÷ 100 and classifies the unrounded result: GL low at or below 10, intermediate above 10 and below 20, and high at or above 20. Published GI categories are low at or below 55, intermediate from 56 through 69, and high at or above 70, and decimal GI values in the unstated intervals receive no GI category while the GL arithmetic continues. In the article’s worked example, GI 70 with 15 g of available carbohydrate and one serving gives a GL of 10.5, displayed as intermediate.

The carb calculator estimates resting energy with the Mifflin equation (male: 10w + 6.25h − 5a + 5; female: −161), rounds resting energy times one of five scenario multipliers (1.2 to 1.9) to get an estimated calorie scenario, and converts 45% to 65% of that scenario to grams at 4 kcal per gram. The lower bound cannot fall below the adult carbohydrate RDA of 130 g/day. Its worked example — a 30-year-old male at 75 kg and 178 cm with the 1.55 scenario — yields a reference range of 299–433 g/day.

Use the glycemic index calculator when you want to compare specific foods or servings: which breakfast cereal, which snack, which portion. It rewards precision on one label — available carbohydrate, not total carbohydrate unless fiber has been excluded — and its output is a category, not a target. Use the carb calculator when you want a daily framework: how many grams to shop, cook, and portion around. It rewards realistic inputs for age, weight, height, and activity, and its range is a population reference, not a personalized need.

The two tools also combine naturally. Build a daily gram range with the carb page, then check the serving-level glycemic load of the foods that fill it.
