Body mass index and body-fat percentage are often treated as the same conversation, but they answer different questions. BMI compares your weight to your height and places the result in familiar screening bands. The body-fat calculator estimates the share of your weight that is fat from circumference measurements, then derives estimated fat and lean mass. Neither is a direct measurement of health, and both are estimates with real limits.
What each calculator does
The BMI calculator needs only height and weight. It converts to metric when needed, computes weight divided by height squared, and reports the result rounded to one decimal place. It also shows the standard adult screening category — underweight below 18.5, normal weight from 18.5 up to 25, overweight from 25 up to 30, and obese at 30 or higher — plus the healthy-weight range for your height (the weights that produce BMI 18.5 to 24.9).
The body fat calculator needs more inputs: height, weight, neck and waist circumference, and hip circumference when you use the female equation. It applies a legacy circumference coefficient set, shows an estimated body-fat percentage, then multiplies that percentage by your weight for estimated fat mass and subtracts it for estimated lean mass. Notably, it does not assign a health, fitness, or military-compliance category. The page deliberately stops at the estimate.

When to use which
Use the BMI calculator when you only have height and weight, want the familiar screening bands, or want the healthy-weight range for a given height. It is the quicker tool and the one that pairs with population-level context.
Use the body fat calculator when your question is about composition — how much of your weight might be fat versus lean mass — and when you can measure circumferences the same way each time. Its own guidance is to repeat measurements using the same approach and compare like with like, because small measurement differences change the result.
The two tools can disagree for good reasons. BMI treats all weight the same, so a muscular person can score high while the circumference estimate tells a different story, and a normal BMI can still miss excess abdominal fat. Conversely, the body-fat page is an equation estimate of tissue, not a direct measurement. When results conflict, that is a signal to look at measurement consistency and body composition context rather than to pick whichever number is more flattering.
