What each calculator does
The Army Body Fat Calculator takes sex, age, body weight in pounds, and waist circumference in feet plus inches. For males it applies −26.97 − 0.12 × weight + 1.99 × waist inches; for females −9.15 − 0.015 × weight + 1.27 × waist inches. The raw result is rounded to the nearest whole percent and compared with a maximum allowed percentage from four age bands — 20, 22, 24, and 26 percent for males, and 30, 32, 34, and 36 percent for females — producing an unofficial pass or fail.
The ABSI (A Body Shape Index) Calculator first computes BMI from height and weight, then calculates the raw index as waist in meters divided by BMI to the two-thirds power times height in meters to the one-half power. The result is shown to four decimal places alongside the BMI used. The page deliberately avoids a z-score or mortality-risk label because reference values matched to age, sex, and population would be required to interpret it.

When to use which
Use the Army calculator when you want a body fat percentage estimate in the style of military circumference testing, including the age-band context and the pass-or-fail framing. Keep in mind the measurement sensitivity: a one-inch waist difference changes the male formula by 1.99 percentage points before rounding and the female formula by 1.27 points, so a small tape error can move a result across a threshold, and the formula uses weight and waist only — no neck, hip, or height.
Use the ABSI calculator when you want the raw research shape index, which combines waist with height and weight, or when you specifically want a number without a pass/fail or risk label. The ABSI page itself suggests waist-to-height ratio for the simpler waist-versus-height task and BMI for the weight-versus-height task; those measures answer different questions and are not interchangeable with each other or with the Army estimate.
