BMI and ABSI both start from height and weight, but they answer different questions. The BMI calculator expresses weight relative to height and reports a familiar adult screening category plus a healthy-weight range. The ABSI calculator goes one step further: it feeds BMI and height into a research index that also depends on waist circumference, so it captures body shape rather than weight alone.
What each calculator does
The BMI calculator accepts metric or imperial height and weight, converts imperial inputs to meters and kilograms, and computes weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared. It displays the BMI rounded to one decimal place, assigns a CDC adult screening category (underweight below 18.5, normal weight from 18.5 up to 25, overweight from 25 up to 30, obese at 30 or higher), and derives the healthy-weight range for that height from BMI 18.5 and 24.9. Its worked example, 175 cm and 70 kg, returns 22.9 and a healthy range of 56.7–76.3 kg.
The ABSI calculator takes height, weight, and waist circumference in centimeters, converts the waist to meters, and computes BMI first (70 / 1.70² = 24.22 kg/m² in its default example). It then divides waist in meters by BMI to the two-thirds power times height to the one-half power, reporting the raw ABSI to four decimal places — 0.0733 for the default, rising to 0.0916 if only the waist changes to 100 cm. The page deliberately provides no risk category, noting that interpreting ABSI requires reference values matched to age, sex, and population.

When to use which
Use the BMI calculator when you want the standard adult weight-versus-height screening result: the one-decimal BMI, its category, and the healthy-weight range for your height. Its page is explicit that the category is a screening label, not a diagnosis, and that it can mislead for muscular athletes, older adults with muscle loss, and people with fluid retention, which is why waist-aware tools exist.
Use the ABSI calculator when you have a waist measured consistently and want the research body-shape index alongside BMI. Because ABSI divides by BMI raised to fractional powers, it isolates the waist contribution to body shape; the page’s own comparison — the same person with an 80 cm versus 100 cm waist yields 0.0733 versus 0.0916 — shows how the index moves with waist while height and weight stay fixed. The ABSI page also recommends keeping the measurement approach unchanged when comparing values over time.
Limits and disclaimer
Both pages are educational only and are not medical advice. BMI is a screening measure whose hard category cut points can flip labels with small measurement differences, and it does not reveal abdominal fat distribution.
