Weighted GPA Calculator

A weighted GPA calculator turns a semester of letter grades into one number under a stated weighting policy. This page uses an illustrative +0.5 honors and +1.0 AP/IB policy and shows both weighted and unweighted GPA. Schools use different grade tables, bonuses, caps, and course classifications, so compare these assumptions with the policy that governs your transcript.

How this calculator works

The calculator accepts one to six courses. For each course, choose a letter grade from A+ through F, enter the course credits, and select Regular, Honors, or AP/IB. The calculator first looks up the base grade points on a standard 4.0 table: A+ and A are 4.0, A- is 3.7, B+ is 3.3, B is 3.0, and so on down to F as 0.0. It then adds a course-type boost: 0.0 for regular, 0.5 for honors, and 1.0 for AP or IB.

Credits matter because GPA is a weighted average. A laboratory science worth four credits should count more than a one-credit elective if your school uses credit hours. The calculator multiplies each course’s adjusted grade points by its credits, adds those weighted points, and divides by total credits. It also repeats the process without course boosts to display unweighted GPA. If total credits are zero, the result is invalid because an average cannot be divided by zero. Formula

The calculator uses these definitions:

  • Grade points are the 4.0-scale value for the selected letter grade.
  • Course weight is 0.0 for regular, 0.5 for honors, and 1.0 for AP/IB.
  • Credits are the numeric credit value entered for the course.
  • Total credits are the sum of all included course credits.

The unweighted result uses the same denominator but removes the course weight:

This is why an AP class can lift the weighted result without changing the unweighted result. The grade is the same, but the adjusted grade points are higher for the advanced course.

Weighted points are 5.0 times 3, plus 3.8 times 4, plus 3.7 times 3, plus 4.0 times 3. That gives 15.0 + 15.2 + 11.1 + 12.0 = 53.3 weighted points. Total credits are 13.

Unweighted points are 4.0 times 3, plus 3.3 times 4, plus 3.7 times 3, plus 3.0 times 3. That gives 12.0 + 13.2 + 11.1 + 9.0 = 45.3.

The displayed result would be a weighted GPA of 4.10, an unweighted GPA of 3.48, total credits of 13, one regular course, one honors course, and two AP/IB courses. Those numbers match the compute logic exactly, including the two-decimal GPA formatting.

Interpreting the result

Weighted GPA is useful because course rigor is part of the story. A 3.7 unweighted GPA built from several AP or IB courses may show a different academic profile than the same unweighted GPA built entirely from regular courses. College admissions offices usually read GPA alongside course selection, transcript context, test scores when submitted, essays, and recommendations. Do not treat the result as a universal college admissions number. High schools may cap GPAs, ignore plus and minus grades, weight only approved AP courses, weight honors differently by department, or exclude middle-school and pass-fail courses. Edge cases and common mistakes

The most common mistake is entering credits as all 1 when your transcript uses different credit values. That turns the formula into a course average rather than a credit-weighted GPA. Another mistake is mixing scales: if your school gives AP courses a 0.8 boost or caps weighted grades at 4.5, the calculator will not mirror that policy. Zero-credit courses are effectively ignored in the denominator, while a schedule with total credits of zero cannot produce a result.

Also watch the difference between course type and grade. An AP class does not automatically mean a high GPA; it adds one point to the grade actually earned. A B in an AP course becomes 4.0 weighted points in this model, not 5.0. Finally, do not round every course before averaging. The calculator keeps the decimal grade points through the computation and rounds the final GPA to two decimals.
