Frequently asked questions
- Can newtons be converted directly to joules?
- Not by themselves. A newton measures force, while a joule measures work or energy. To calculate work from force, you also need a distance over which the force acts in the direction of motion. This calculator multiplies newtons by meters to get joules.
- What if the force is applied at an angle?
- The calculator does not include an angle input. In physics, only the component of force in the direction of displacement contributes to work. If the force is angled, enter the parallel component of the force, not the total force magnitude, or use a fuller work formula.
- What happens when distance is zero?
- The result is zero joules when distance is zero, even if the force is positive. That matches the mechanical work definition for displacement: holding a heavy object motionless can be tiring biologically, but the simplified external mechanical work on the object is zero.
