A weighted average and a weighted GPA both answer the same structural question: what is the mean when some entries count more than others? The difference is how far each tool goes to specialize. What each calculator does
The weighted average calculator accepts up to 100 rows, each with a value and a weight. It multiplies each value by its weight, adds the products, and divides by the total weight: Σ(value × weight) ÷ Σ weight. Weights are meant to be zero or positive, a zero-weight row contributes nothing, and the total weight must be greater than zero. Values themselves may be negative. The result is rounded to two decimal places, and the page also reports the total weight, the entry count, and a weighted-products breakdown per row. In its default example, 90 × 20 plus 85 × 50 plus 95 × 30 sums to 8900 over a total weight of 100, giving a weighted average of 89.
The weighted GPA calculator accepts one to six courses. For each course you pick a letter grade from A+ through F, enter its credits, and choose Regular, Honors, or AP/IB. It looks up base grade points on a standard 4.0 table (A/A+ = 4.0, A− = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, down to F = 0.0), adds the course boost — 0.0, 0.5, or 1.0 — and multiplies by credits. Weighted GPA is the sum of those adjusted weighted points divided by total credits; unweighted GPA repeats the division without the boosts. In its checked example, an AP English A (5.0 × 3 = 15.0), honors chemistry B+ (3.8 × 4 = 15.2), regular algebra A− (3.7 × 3 = 11.1), and AP history B (4.0 × 3 = 12.0) give 53.3 points over 13 credits, a weighted GPA of 4.10 and an unweighted GPA of 3.48. Both GPAs are displayed to two decimals, with course counts and total credits as integers.

When to use which
Use the weighted average calculator when your weights are explicit numbers that are not course credits — assignment points, category percentages, portfolio shares, sample sizes, or exposure minutes. Limits and disclaimer
The weighted average calculator requires a positive total weight and is designed for nonnegative weights; negative weights can pull results outside the input range. The weighted GPA calculator accepts only letter grades A+ through F, takes at most six courses, and applies an illustrative honors/AP weighting that many schools do not follow exactly. Neither tool is a transcript system: the weighted average page notes that gradebooks often add dropped assignments, caps, and late penalties, and the GPA page states plainly that the result is a planning tool, not an official GPA. College admissions read grades alongside course selection, test scores, and application context, so no single average should be treated as a verdict.
