The ratio is a single division:

Worked example

Take a waist of 80 cm and a height of 170 cm:

Interpreting the result

Below 0.5 is the side of the boundary most guidance treats as the target for adults. From 0.5 up to just under 0.6, UK guidance describes increased central adiposity and increased health risk; at 0.6 or more, further increased risk. These bands are population screening labels, and a result near a cut point can flip with a one-centimeter measurement change even when nothing clinically meaningful has changed.
