Waist-to-Height Ratio Calculator
The waist-to-height ratio calculator divides your waist circumference by your height to produce a single number, then places that number relative to the 0.5 screening threshold. The working rule behind the threshold is simple: keep your waist to less than half your height. A ratio below 0.5 lands on the commonly cited target side of the boundary; 0.5 and above sit at or beyond it.
This page uses centimeters for both inputs so the ratio is unit-free. The same division works with inches or any matching unit, because the units cancel.
What the result tells you
The primary result is the ratio itself, rounded to two decimals. The calculator then shows:
- Category — below 0.5, at 0.5, or above 0.5.
- Screening threshold — the 0.5 boundary used by the classification.
- Target waist for your height — half of your height in centimeters, i.e. the largest waist that stays below the threshold.
The ratio is a screening cue about where waist size sits relative to height, not a measurement of body fat or a diagnosis. It is best used alongside other measures such as BMI and body composition estimates like the body fat calculator.
How it works
Waist-to-height ratio captures abdominal fat distribution in a way that total-body measures cannot. Two people can share the same BMI while storing fat very differently; waist relative to height is one way to flag excess central adiposity. The 2012 systematic review and meta-analysis by Ashwell, Gunn, and Gibson — covering data from more than 300,000 adults — concluded that waist-to-height ratio discriminated cardiometabolic risk factors slightly better than BMI and waist circumference, and it promoted the simple “less than half your height” message.
UK guidance puts the boundary to practical use. The NHS presents the waist-to-height ratio as a screening aid for adults, and NICE classifies adult ratios of 0.40 to 0.49 as healthy central adiposity, 0.50 to 0.59 as increased, and 0.6 or more as further increased — for adults with a BMI under 35.

Take a waist of 80 cm and a height of 170 cm:

At exactly 85 cm the ratio is 0.50 and the calculator reports At the 0.5 threshold. At 100 cm and 170 cm the ratio is 0.588…, displayed as 0.59, and the category is Above 0.5.
Interpreting the result
Below 0.5 is the side of the boundary most guidance treats as the target for adults. From 0.5 up to just under 0.6, UK guidance describes increased central adiposity and increased health risk; at 0.6 or more, further increased risk. These bands are population screening labels, and a result near a cut point can flip with a one-centimeter measurement change even when nothing clinically meaningful has changed.

Measurement guidance
Measure the waist at the narrowest point between the ribs and the hip bones, with the tape snug but not compressing the skin, after breathing out normally. Take height standing, without shoes, in the same unit. Consistency matters more than perfection: the same technique used every time makes the trend meaningful. A waist measured over bulky clothing, at the navel instead of the natural waist, or at a different time of day can shift the ratio by several hundredths.
Limitations and disclaimer

The 0.5 threshold is aimed at adults and is less straightforward for children and teenagers, during pregnancy, and for adults with a BMI of 35 or above, where NICE notes waist-to-height ratio is generally not a helpful predictor of additional risk. Common mistakes
- Mixing units, for example a centimeter waist with an inch height, which makes the ratio meaningless.
- Treating the category as a diagnosis instead of a screening cue.
- Measuring the waist at the navel or over clothing and getting an inconsistent ratio.
- Ignoring the BMI caveat: the adult 0.5 bands are not designed for BMI of 35 or above.
- Expecting two-decimal display to match an unrounded hand calculation exactly.
