What each calculator does

The percentage calculator has three modes. Percent-of mode multiplies percent divided by 100 by a whole to find a part: 20% of 80 is 16. “X is what percent of Y” mode divides the part by the whole: 20 is 25% of 80. Change mode compares a before-and-after pair to the starting magnitude: 80 to 100 is a 25% increase. It rejects a whole of zero and a starting value of zero.

The average percentage calculator takes two to five percentage values and computes their simple arithmetic mean, reporting the average, the sum, and the count. Ten, 20, and 30 percent sum to 60 and average to 20.00%. Every entered value receives equal weight, and hidden fields are excluded from the calculation.

When to use which

Use the percentage calculator when your question is a single relationship: a discount amount, a share of a total, a score out of a maximum, or how much a value moved relative to its start. Its change mode covers before-and-after comparisons, and its percent-of mode covers “percent of” phrasing.

Use the average percentage calculator when you already have several percentage values and want one summary number — equally weighted quiz percentages, repeated scores from the same protocol, or monthly rates you deliberately weight equally. Do not average percentages that come from very different sample sizes: a class rate from 10 students and one from 200 students should not each move the average by half.
