VO2max and one-repetition maximum are both single-number fitness estimates that come from a field test, and both calculators on this site are careful to call the result an estimate rather than a measurement. The difference is which fitness quality each one targets: VO2max estimates maximal oxygen uptake, the standard marker of cardiorespiratory (aerobic) fitness, while one-rep max estimates maximal strength from a submaximal set. They are not competing versions of the same number — they are answers to different training questions.

What each calculator does
The VO2max estimator turns a 12-minute run or walk into an estimate of maximal oxygen uptake. You enter the distance you covered in exactly 12 minutes; the calculator applies the Cooper equation, , in ml/kg/min, plus your average pace over the test and, when age and sex are entered, a reference band (excellent, above average, average, below average, or poor) from the Cooper test norms. For a 30-year-old man covering 2,400 m, it shows 42.4 ml/kg/min, an above-average band (2,300–2,700 m), and a 5.0 min/km pace. The one rep max calculator turns a completed set into an estimated one-repetition maximum. You enter the weight lifted and reps completed (1 to 20); the calculator shows the Epley estimate as the primary result, with Brzycki and Lombardi estimates underneath, all rounded to two decimals in the unit you selected. For 135 lb for 5 reps, Epley gives 157.48 lb, Brzycki 151.88 lb, and Lombardi 158.57 lb. When to use which
Use the VO2max estimator when your goal is endurance: tracking aerobic fitness over time, benchmarking a run or walk against age- and sex-based norms, or measuring the fitness side of a cardio program. Repeat the 12-minute test under similar conditions and compare trends rather than single numbers.
Use the one rep max calculator when your goal is strength: estimating a max lift without a maximal attempt, picking training percentages for work sets, or tracking strength progress across similar rep sets over time. Its own guidance is to use the estimate as a planning yardstick, not as a load to attempt immediately — a formula estimate is not a guarantee you can safely lift that weight today.
Both tools share the same caveat: the number is a population-level estimate with real individual error, so it is a benchmark for planning, not a measurement and not a medical signal. If you are training both qualities, the two estimates complement each other — one tracks the engine, the other the chassis — and neither replaces a proper warm-up and progressive loading.
