Units and how the calculator works

Since the international foot is exactly 0.3048 meter, the statute mile is exactly 1,609.344 meters, or 1.609344 kilometers. The calculator multiplies by 1.609344 and rounds only for display.
The kilometer is a metric unit equal to 1,000 meters. It is not just a foreign-language version of a mile; it is shorter, so the kilometer number will be larger for the same route. Precision and significant figures
Precision should match the source distance. A highway sign that says 25 miles does not promise accuracy to the nearest foot, so 40.23 km is already more detail than the sign itself provides. A GPS file may store many decimals, but consumer devices still have signal and map-matching uncertainty. For travel, one or two decimals is enough; for training, two decimals lets you distinguish a 5.00-mile run from a 5.50-mile run; for engineering, keep the exact 1.609344 factor until the final answer.
Be careful with significant figures in speed-limit discussions. A 55 mph speed limit is not converted by this page because speed includes time. The distance part is 55 miles, which is 88.51 km, but 55 mph is about 88.51 km/h only because the hour unit stays the same. If fuel economy is involved, route distance is only one part of the calculation; the fuel economy converter handles miles-per-gallon and metric consumption measures more directly.
Common mistakes
- Mixing statute miles with nautical miles. A nautical mile is used in marine and aviation navigation and is longer than a statute mile.
- Rounding the factor to 1.6 for every calculation. That shortcut makes 100 miles become 160 km instead of 160.93 km.
- Converting a rounded race nickname instead of the official distance. Marathon and half-marathon distances are defined in meters, even when runners discuss them in miles.
- Treating a distance conversion as a pace conversion. Minutes per mile and minutes per kilometer require dividing time by distance after the distance unit is settled.
- Assuming kilometers are bigger because the word is longer. A kilometer is shorter than a mile, so the kilometer count is larger for the same route.
Accuracy and limits
The calculator keeps the defined or cited relationship through the calculation and rounds only the displayed result. A converted number does not become more precise than the source measurement. Keep additional digits for chained calculations, then round to the precision justified by the original value; also preserve any reference basis or notation convention named with the input.
