Heart rate zones and VO2max are both aerobic-training numbers, but they come from different places. What each calculator does

The heart rate reserve zone calculator takes age (15–100), resting heart rate (40–120 bpm), and lower and upper percentages. When the custom max heart rate switch is off, it estimates the maximum with the sex-neutral Tanaka equation, HRmax = 208 − 0.7 × age; when on, it uses an entered value from 120 to 220 bpm, which must exceed the resting rate. Heart-rate reserve is HRmax minus resting heart rate, and each endpoint is resting heart rate plus reserve times the selected percentage, rounded to whole bpm with half-up rounding. For age 30 with a 60 bpm resting rate, the estimated maximum is 187 bpm, reserve is 127 bpm, and the 60–70% band is 136–149 bpm. The page states the calculator performs arithmetic only: it does not determine whether a selected percentage is appropriate, and it attaches no purpose, benefit, or intensity classification to the result.

The VO2max estimator takes the distance you cover in exactly 12 minutes (minimum 100 m), with optional age and sex. It applies the Cooper equation, VO2max = (distance in meters − 504.9) ÷ 44.73, which returns zero at about 505 m and negative values below that — entries below the range the formula was built for. The average pace is 12,000 ÷ distance in meters, in minutes per kilometer. When age and sex are entered, the result is compared with the Cooper test norms from the original 1968 study and labeled excellent, above average, average, below average, or poor (ages 13–19 use the 20–29 band; sex not specified shows no band). A 30-year-old man covering 2,400 m gets 42.4 ml/kg/min, a 5.0 min/km pace, and the above-average band (2,300–2,700 m). The result is a training benchmark, not a laboratory measurement.
