The 8 hour shift calculator and the time duration calculator both do clock arithmetic, and each page points to the other for the neighboring case. The real difference is the question being asked. The shift calculator plans a single work shift: given a known start or end time, a paid working duration, and an unpaid break, it returns the missing clock time and keeps paid time separate from the clock span. The time duration calculator measures any interval between two clock times, or adds and subtracts time from a clock time, in hours, minutes, and seconds. If your unit is a shift with breaks, use the shift calculator; if your unit is an elapsed interval, use the time duration calculator.

What each calculator does

The shift calculator takes a known value (start or end), a shift duration in minutes, hours, or hours/min, and break minutes. It adds working minutes and break minutes into a total clock span, then moves forward from a known start or backward from a known end, wrapping around the 24-hour clock. A caregiver starting at 07:30 with 8 hours of work and a 30 minute unpaid break gets a 510 minute span and an end time of 16:00 — 8 hours 30 minutes on the clock, 8 hours 0 minutes effective. Overnight work wraps the same way: 22:00 plus 8 hours plus a 30 minute break displays as 06:30. It rejects breaks at least as long as the shift and caps work at 24 hours.

The time duration calculator has three modes. Time difference converts both clock times to seconds after midnight and subtracts; if the end is earlier than the start it adds one 24-hour day, so 23:10 to 01:05 is a forward interval. Add and subtract modes move a base clock time by an interval in days, hours, minutes, and seconds, wrapping within the daily clock. Every result also appears as total hours, minutes, and seconds, and the page warns that decimal hours are base ten while clock minutes are base sixty.

When to use which

Use the shift calculator when a single shift is the unit of work: you know the start or the end and need the other, and an unpaid break matters to the clock span but not to paid time. Use the time duration calculator when the question is the size of an interval — 13:30 to 17:45, a 45 minute workout, or counting back from a deadline — or when you need the span in one unit.

Neither is a payroll tool. The shift page notes that hours worked under the Fair Labor Standards Act can depend on whether time is suffered or permitted to work, and that break treatment can be fact specific; time zones and daylight saving changes are outside both models. Can the time duration calculator handle shifts or dates?
Only the clock part. Difference mode can add one day when the end time is earlier than the start, and add and subtract modes wrap results within a 24-hour clock, but the calculator tracks no calendar dates, time zones, or daylight saving changes. The shift calculator is also wall-clock only: an overnight shift displays as a normal 24-hour time rather than a next-day date, so record dates separately for payroll.
