Feet to Miles vs km to Feet
Feet, miles, and kilometers are three common ways to describe the same road: the imperial ladder runs 5280 feet to one statute mile, and the modern definitions are exact because the international foot is 0.3048 meter. That makes one mile exactly 1609.344 meters, or 1.609344 kilometers, and one kilometer about 3280.84 feet. These two calculators approach that relationship from different ends — one counts how many miles fit into feet, the other expresses kilometers in feet — and together they cover the mile-kilometer bridge through the shared foot unit.
What each calculator does
Feet to miles converter. The feet to miles converter turns a feet measurement into statute miles by dividing by the exact factor of 5280 feet per mile. It also reports yards and kilometers for context: yards show the imperial middle step (1 yd = 3 ft), and kilometers come from multiplying the mile result by 1.609344. Its examples are field-style — a 7920 ft park loop becomes 1.5 mi, 2640 yd, and 2.414016 km — and it is built for route notes, running loops, property lines, and building setbacks.
km to feet conversion calculator. The km to feet conversion changes kilometers into feet by multiplying by the defining ratio 1000/0.3048, carried as about 3280.84 feet per kilometer and rounded only for display. It shows the entered kilometers, meters, inches, and an approximate mile value alongside the primary feet result. Its examples are elevation- and altitude-flavored: a 4.167 km summit becomes about 13,671.26 ft, and an 8.5 km reference becomes 27,887.14 ft.
Side-by-side
| Feet to miles converter | km to feet conversion | |
|---|---|---|
| Source unit | Feet | Kilometers |
| Primary output | Statute miles (feet ÷ 5280) | Feet (km × 1000/0.3048, shown as × 3,280.84) |
| Supporting outputs | Yards, kilometers | Meters, inches, approximate miles |
| Key relationships | 1 mi = 5280 ft = 1.609344 km | 1 km = 3,280.839895013123 ft; 1 ft = 0.3048 m |
| Typical use | Running routes, property lines, road distances | Elevation, altitude, trail profiles, long heights |
| Example | 7920 ft = 1.5 mi = 2.414016 km | 8.5 km = 27,887.14 ft ≈ 5.281655 mi |
When to use which
Use the feet to miles converter when the measurement is in feet and the destination is miles — a course wheel reading, a survey plat, a long utility corridor, or a park loop. Its mile output is the road language people expect, and the kilometer row is already there when you want the metric comparison.
Use the km to feet conversion when the source is metric and the audience thinks in feet — a summit or pass height, an aircraft altitude note, or a trail profile that mixes kilometers and feet. The chain of outputs makes the scale visible: 1 km is 1000 m, about 3280.84 ft, and about 0.621371 miles, so a kilometer is a little over six-tenths of a mile.
The two tools connect through the foot: convert kilometers to feet first, then divide by 5280 to reach miles. Both pages use the statute mile and the international foot, not the nautical mile (longer, used in marine and aviation navigation) and not an obsolete survey-mile convention. For a general selector across many length units, the length converter and distance converter cover the broader set.
