Planning and counting are two different jobs in calorie tracking. The macro calculator builds a daily calorie target — and a protein, fat, and carbohydrate split — from your body, activity, and goal. The meal calorie calculator totals what a specific meal or food actually delivers by multiplying a per-serving value by servings. One sets the plan; the other checks the execution.
What each calculator does
The macro calculator estimates daily calories in three stages: Mifflin-St Jeor resting energy from age, sex, height, and weight; an activity multiplier from 1.2 (sedentary) to 1.9 (very active); and a goal adjustment of minus 15 percent for losing, unchanged for maintaining, or plus 15 percent for gaining. It then splits the target — protein grams come from your g/kg target (default 1.6 g/kg) times body weight, fat is 25 percent of calories divided by 9, and carbohydrate absorbs the remaining calories at 4 kcal per gram. The worked example (30-year-old man, 175 cm, 70 kg, moderate activity, maintaining) produces 2,556 kcal with 112 g protein, 71 g fat, and 367 g carbs.
The meal calorie calculator is deliberately narrower: enter calories per serving and the number of servings, and it multiplies them, rounding the total to a whole calorie. A muffin at 320 calories per serving in a two-serving package totals 640 calories; 1.5 servings of a 210-calorie-per-serving food totals 315 calories. It does not identify the food, judge quality, or calculate macros — it only scales a known per-serving value.

When to use which
Use the macro calculator when you are setting up a plan and need a starting daily target and gram split — it is the tool that turns body data and a lose/maintain/gain goal into numbers you can track against. Remember the minus 15 percent loss adjustment is a simplification: the page checks it against the ACSM 500–1,000 kcal/day adult weight-loss deficit, and for small people the cut can land below that range.
Use the meal calorie calculator when you are counting what you actually ate against that plan — a label, a meal-prep container, a shared recipe, or a restaurant estimate. It is the arithmetic for “if one serving has this many calories, how many are in the amount I ate?” The macro calculator’s own page points to meal calorie for exactly this job: count actual meals against the gram targets.

The macro calculator’s Mifflin-St Jeor equation and activity multipliers are population estimates — individual metabolism varies, and the page is not appropriate as a clinical plan for diabetes, kidney or liver conditions, pregnancy, an eating disorder history, or coached athletes. The meal calorie calculator cannot be more accurate than the entered per-serving value, assumes the serving measurement matches what you ate, and requires a quantity of at least one serving.
