“Digital storage” can mean two different questions. The first is about units: how many megabytes are in a gigabyte, or what a terabyte means. The second is about purchases: how much storage your phone, laptop, external drive, or cloud plan should actually have. What each calculator does
The digital storage converter takes a byte quantity in one unit and expresses it in any of eight units: decimal KB, MB, GB, and TB based on powers of 1000, or IEC binary KiB, MiB, GiB, and TiB based on powers of 1024. It converts the input to bytes first, then divides by the target unit’s byte factor. The labels stay distinct, so 1 GB (1,000,000,000 bytes) is never presented as 1 GiB (1,073,741,824 bytes). Its FAQ also covers the bit-versus-byte distinction: GB is not Gbit, because a byte contains eight bits.
The digital storage needs calculator is a planning model rather than a unit conversion. You enter current files split into photos, videos, documents, apps and games, and other files; the total stored copies (the working copy plus backups); and an annual growth rate. It adds the categories, multiplies by the copy count, grows the result for three years, and rounds up to a built-in tier — 128 GB, 256 GB, 512 GB, 1 TB, 2 TB, 4 TB, 8 TB, or 16 TB, with larger results rounding to the next whole terabyte. Its worked example: 500 GB of current files with two copies grows at 20% per year to 1,728 GB, which maps to a 2.00 TB recommendation.

When to use which
Use the digital storage converter when you already have a number and need it in different units — a video file reported in GB that you want in MB, or an operating-system readout in GiB that you want to compare with a decimal GB listing. It is also the right tool for verifying that two sources use the same convention before you compare them.
Use the storage needs calculator when you are deciding what to buy. A current folder size alone understates the purchase because files grow, backups multiply the requirement, and devices are often chosen for years at a time. The calculator builds those assumptions in explicitly and rounds up to a tier you can actually find in a store. If the question is how much network data those files will consume each month rather than how much space they occupy, the data usage calculator is the better tool.
Limits and disclaimer
Both tools are estimates within their stated assumptions. The converter is exact for the byte factors it uses but cannot choose the convention for you — a result is only as good as the label on your source value. The needs calculator uses editable planning assumptions — the three-year horizon, the growth rate you enter, and its publisher-defined tiers — and does not claim those tiers match every provider’s products. Neither tool accounts for operating-system overhead or reserved space on a real device, and neither measures your actual files. Treat the needs estimate as a starting point for a purchase decision, not a guarantee of capacity.
