Digital Storage Converter

Use this converter to express a byte quantity in either decimal storage units or IEC binary units. Decimal KB, MB, GB, and TB use powers of 1,000. Binary KiB, MiB, GiB, and TiB use powers of 1,024. The distinct labels prevent a result based on one convention from being presented as the other.

Choose the unit shown by your file, device, operating system, or specification. The converter first changes the input to bytes and then divides by the target unit’s byte factor:

bytes=input×source factor\text{bytes} = \text{input} \times \text{source factor}

target value=bytestarget factor\text{target value} = \frac{\text{bytes}}{\text{target factor}}

Decimal storage units

The SI prefixes are decimal:

UnitBytes
1 KB1,000
1 MB1,000,000
1 GB1,000,000,000
1 TB1,000,000,000,000

With the default units, 1 GB = 1,000 MB.

IEC binary storage units

IEC binary prefixes name powers of 1,024:

UnitBytes
1 KiB1,024
1 MiB1,048,576
1 GiB1,073,741,824
1 TiB1,099,511,627,776

For example, 1 GiB = 1,024 MiB. Converting 1 GB to GiB instead gives approximately 0.931323 GiB because the byte factors differ.

If you need a transfer-rate conversion, use the data transfer rate converter. For base notation rather than storage units, use the binary converter.

Frequently asked questions

How many MB are in 1 GB?
There are 1,000 MB in 1 GB. The decimal prefixes kilo, mega, giga, and tera represent powers of 1,000.
How many MiB are in 1 GiB?
There are 1,024 MiB in 1 GiB. KiB, MiB, GiB, and TiB are IEC binary-prefix units based on powers of 1,024.
Are GB and GiB the same?
No. One GB is 1,000,000,000 bytes, while one GiB is 1,073,741,824 bytes. Choose the unit printed by the source rather than treating the labels as interchangeable.
Is GB the same as Gbit?
No. GB is gigabytes and Gbit is gigabits. A byte contains eight bits.
