The BMR calculator reports two equations and then multiplies by an activity factor to estimate total daily energy expenditure. The calorie calculator — titled the Resting Energy Expenditure Calculator — deliberately reports only the predicted resting estimate and refuses to apply an activity multiplier or present any intake target.

What each calculator does

The BMR calculator takes sex, age, height, and weight. Its primary result is Mifflin-St Jeor BMR, rounded to whole calories per day. It also displays the older Harris-Benedict result as a secondary value, then estimates TDEE by multiplying the Mifflin-St Jeor result by a chosen activity factor: 1.2 sedentary, 1.375 light, 1.55 moderate, 1.725 very active, or 1.9 extra active.

The calorie calculator takes the same four inputs but outputs only predicted resting energy expenditure from the simplified sex-specific Mifflin equations. It does not infer activity, TDEE, maintenance, weight change, or an intake prescription. Its documented entry bounds are age 14 to 100 with positive height and weight.

In fact, the resting equations on the two pages are the same family: the calorie page’s male and female formulas are exactly the Mifflin base with the same +5 and −161 constants the BMR page uses for its primary result. The difference is what happens next.

When to use which

Use the BMR calculator when your question involves the full daily picture: comparing the two resting equations, or estimating TDEE from an activity level to sanity-check an intake range. Its own guidance is to compare predicted TDEE with actual weight trends rather than treating the formula as gospel.

Use the calorie calculator when you want the narrowest defensible result — predicted resting expenditure with no activity semantics attached. That can be useful when comparing predictions across tools, when you do not trust your activity-factor guess, or when you want a number that is not dressed up as a calorie target.

A practical note from the BMR page: BMR is below most people’s total needs, so treating it as a recommended intake is a common mistake. Both calculators are predictions from population equations, not measurements of your metabolism. Body composition, thyroid status, medications, illness, training load, and tracking accuracy can all push real needs away from the estimate.
