Fuel Cost Calculator
The fuel cost calculator converts a route distance, a fuel economy rating, and a pump price into a trip fuel budget. It is designed for everyday driving decisions: estimating the cost of visiting family, deciding whether to carpool, pricing a delivery route, comparing a road trip with a flight, or checking whether a longer detour is worth the cheaper fuel station. The result is total cost, fuel used, cost per mile or kilometer, and total distance after any round-trip adjustment.
Fuel spending is easy to underestimate because the price appears in small pieces. A driver may notice a $45 fill-up but not connect it to a specific trip. This tool works from the trip outward. If you know the distance, the car’s practical fuel economy, and the current fuel price, you can estimate the fuel portion before leaving. It intentionally excludes tolls, parking, maintenance, insurance, and vehicle depreciation so the result stays focused on gasoline or diesel consumption.
How to use this calculator
Start with distance and choose whether that distance is in miles or kilometers. Enter the one-way route distance unless you already calculated the full route. If you want the calculator to double the distance automatically, turn on round trip. The form then uses twice the entered distance for fuel used, cost, cost per unit, and the displayed total distance.
Next, enter fuel efficiency. Select MPG for miles per gallon, common in the United States, or L/100km for liters per 100 kilometers, common in many metric markets. If the distance and efficiency units do not match, the calculator converts internally. Miles become kilometers for the L/100km calculation, and kilometers become miles for the MPG calculation. Finally, enter the fuel price and currency. The price is interpreted per gallon when MPG is selected and per liter when L/100km is selected.

For MPG, the calculator converts distance to miles if necessary and divides by fuel economy:

The calculator rounds the displayed total cost, fuel used, and cost per distance unit. Internally, cost per mile or kilometer is based on the unrounded total cost divided by the displayed trip distance.

Example: trip fuel cost
Use the default-style inputs: 100 miles, 25 MPG, $3.50 per gallon, USD, and round trip off. Because the efficiency unit is MPG and the distance unit is miles, no distance conversion is needed. Fuel used is 100 divided by 25, which equals 4 gallons. Trip cost is 4 times $3.50, so the primary result is $14.00. The cost per mile is $14 divided by 100, or $0.14 per mile, and the displayed total distance is 100.0 miles.
Now turn round trip on without changing anything else. The round-trip option doubles the entered distance from 100 to 200 miles before calculating fuel. Fuel used becomes 200 divided by 25, or 8 gallons. At $3.50 per gallon, the total cost becomes $28.00. Cost per mile remains $0.14 because the trip and cost doubled together. This is exactly why the round-trip switch is useful: it changes the trip size without changing the vehicle or pump assumptions.
For a mixed-unit example, enter 100 kilometers, choose MPG, keep 25 MPG, and enter $3.50 per gallon. The calculator converts 100 kilometers to about 62.1371 miles, divides by 25, and estimates about 2.49 gallons. The output still labels the cost per kilometer because that was the selected distance unit.
Choosing realistic inputs
The most accurate fuel economy number is usually your own. Window-sticker ratings, dashboard estimates, and published averages can be helpful, but they may not match a specific trip. Highway cruising can beat city fuel economy; stop-and-go traffic, roof cargo, cold weather, mountain grades, or underinflated tires can reduce it. If you have recent fill-up records, divide miles driven by gallons purchased and use that number for a conservative trip estimate.
Fuel price also deserves care. The calculator does not fetch live prices. For a local errand, use the price at your usual station. For a road trip, consider using a slightly higher price than today’s local number because prices vary by state, region, and date. A small cushion matters on long routes: at 25 MPG, a 600 mile round trip uses 24 gallons, so a $0.40 per gallon surprise adds $9.60.
Money-saving context
Fuel cost is one part of the driving decision, but it is the part you can often influence immediately. Combining errands reduces duplicate miles. Removing unnecessary cargo, keeping tires properly inflated, and avoiding aggressive acceleration can improve real-world efficiency. Carpooling divides the fuel cost across riders, and the per-person cost can be estimated by taking the calculator’s total cost and splitting it manually.
For commuting, convert the result into a monthly number. A 22 mile round-trip commute at 30 MPG and $3.75 per gallon costs about $2.75 per workday in fuel, or roughly $60 for 22 workdays. That sounds modest until parking, maintenance, and vehicle wear are added. If a different route is longer but avoids heavy traffic, compare both distances with realistic MPG instead of assuming the shortest route is cheapest.
