- What does the attrition rate calculator measure?
- It divides the number of employees who left during a period by the average headcount for that same period. In HR practice, attrition is often used for voluntary exits, retirements, or roles that are not immediately refilled, so define which departure types you include before comparing teams.
- How is attrition different from turnover?
- The math can look identical, but the management question is different. Attrition usually focuses on people leaving the organization, especially voluntary or unreplaced departures. Turnover is broader and often counts all separations, including involuntary exits and positions that are quickly refilled.
- Should I count layoffs in attrition?
- Only count layoffs if your reporting policy defines attrition as all separations. Many HR teams separate voluntary attrition, involuntary attrition, retirements, and restructuring exits because each category needs a different response.
