Facial Thirds Calculator
The facial thirds are the three vertical zones that divide the face from hairline to chin: the forehead, the nose-and-midface region, and the chin. In classical portrait drawing, a traditional guideline says these three zones are approximately equal, a 1:1:1 arrangement known as the facial thirds canon. This facial thirds calculator measures the three zones and reports how close they come to that ideal. It is an aesthetic novelty and a proportion exercise, not a scientific beauty test, so treat the result as art-tool curiosity rather than a verdict.
How it works
Enter three measurements in the same unit: forehead length from the hairline to the brow line, nose length from the brow line to the base of the nose, and chin length from the base of the nose to the bottom of the chin. The calculator computes two pairwise ratios and one overall balance:
- Upper to middle third: forehead divided by nose.
- Middle to lower third: nose divided by chin.
- Thirds balance: the longest of the three zones divided by the shortest.
A value of 1.00 for any ratio means the two zones compared are equal, and the balance summarizes all three zones at once. When the balance is below 1.05, the note says the forehead, nose, and chin are close to equal thirds. When the balance is 1.05 or higher, the note names the dominant zone — forehead-dominant, midface-dominant, or chin-dominant — based on whichever measurement is longest.
The 1:1:1 canon is a classical convention from portrait art. Head-drawing courses teach the rule of equal thirds: hairline to brow, brow to the base of the nose, and nose base to chin are approximately equal in an idealized face. Anthropometric studies use the same three zones under the technical names trichion to glabella, glabella to subnasale, and subnasale to menton, but real faces deviate from the ideal, and the canon is a design tool rather than a scientific definition of beauty.
Formula
Let F be the forehead length, N the nose length, and C the chin length, all in the same unit.
Each ratio is ideal at 1.00, which is the equal-thirds arrangement of the classical canon.
Worked example
Use the default measurements: forehead 6, nose 6, and chin 6. The upper-to-middle ratio is 6 divided by 6 equals 1.00, the middle-to-lower ratio is 6 divided by 6 equals 1.00, and the balance is 6 divided by 6 equals 1.00. Because the balance is below 1.05, the note reports that the forehead, nose, and chin are close to equal thirds.
Now try forehead 7, nose 6, and chin 6. The upper-to-middle ratio is 7 divided by 6, about 1.17, the middle-to-lower ratio is 6 divided by 6 equals 1.00, and the balance is 7 divided by 6, about 1.17. Because the balance is at least 1.05 and the forehead is the longest zone, the note calls the face forehead-dominant.
Measurement tips
Face a mirror or use a straight-on photo, then measure each zone vertically with a ruler, a piece of string, or a pixel ruler on the image:
- Hairline: the top of the forehead where the hair begins. Use the natural hairline, not styled hair; if the hairline is receding, shaved, or covered, the landmark is unclear and the result will shift.
- Brow line: the lower edge of the brow, at the same height on both sides.
- Nose base: the point under the nose where it meets the upper lip.
- Chin: the lowest point of the chin with the jaw relaxed and lips closed.
Keep your head level, use the same unit for all three measurements, and take all three from the same view. Consistent landmarks matter more than precision: a slightly different hairline choice changes the forehead measurement and therefore every ratio.
Limitations
The 1:1:1 canon is a portrait-art convention, not a scientific finding. Anthropometric research uses the same three zones, but measured facial heights vary with age, sex, and population, and attractiveness is influenced by many features at once rather than by a single ratio. This calculator compares three numbers you enter; it cannot measure beauty, health, identity, or worth. If you are drawing or designing, the thirds can guide construction, but preserve what you actually see, because faces are supposed to vary.
