Facial Harmony Calculator
The facial harmony calculator compares three classical horizontal facial proportions with a small set of historical design rules called the neoclassical canons: the distance between the eyes, the mouth-to-nose width relationship, and the overall face width. It is an aesthetic novelty, not a scientific beauty test. A high score means the entered measurements line up with those canons; it cannot measure attractiveness, health, symmetry in a clinical sense, or anyone’s worth.
Responsible interpretation first
The neoclassical canons grew out of sculpture and drawing traditions rather than measurement science. When researchers actually measured faces, only a minority of people matched any single canon. Studies also show that preferences around facial proportion are complicated, culturally influenced, and driven by many features beyond any fixed ratio. That context matters because a calculator can make a number look authoritative.
This one is deliberately transparent: it takes five measurements, computes three ratios, scores each ratio by closeness to a canon, and averages the three scores. The result is a rough composite of how closely the entered measurements follow those three historical rules. It is a proportion exercise best used for curiosity, art, or design discussion.
How it works
The calculator asks for five measurements: distance between the eyes, one eye width, nose width, mouth width, and face width. Every value must be positive, and all values must use the same unit — centimeters, inches, or pixels all work if every measurement uses the same unit.
The three checks are the distance between the eyes divided by one eye width, compared with an ideal of 1.0 (the “one eye width between the eyes” canon); mouth width divided by nose width, compared with an ideal of 1.5 (the classical mouth-to-nose canon); and face width divided by five eye widths, compared with an ideal of 1.0 (the five-eyes-wide rule). Each ratio gets a closeness score from 0 to 100, then the harmony score is the simple average of the three.
The method also attaches a note based on the overall score. Scores of 90 percent or higher receive the strongest wording, 80 to 89.9 percent a balanced note, 70 to 79.9 percent a moderate note, and lower scores a reminder that these canons are historical conventions rather than a scientific beauty measure.
Formula
Let actual be the measured ratio for one component and ideal be the canon value for that component (1.0 or 1.5).
Worked example
Use the default measurements from the calculator: distance between eyes 3.2, one eye width 2, nose width 3, mouth width 4.9, and face width 11.1. The interocular ratio is 3.2 divided by 2, or 1.6. Compared with the ideal of 1.0, the closeness score is 100 minus 0.6 times 100, which is 40.0 percent. The mouth-to-nose ratio is 4.9 divided by 3, about 1.633. Compared with the ideal of 1.5, the score is about 91.1 percent. The face-width ratio is 11.1 divided by 10, or 1.11, scoring 89.0 percent. Averaging the three scores gives about 73.4 percent, which matches the overall result after formatting.
Interpretation
The one-eye-width spacing check compares the distance between the inner corners of the eyes with a single eye width. In the classical canon these are equal, so the ideal ratio is 1.0. The mouth-to-nose check compares mouth width with nose width against the canon that the mouth is one and a half times as wide as the nose. The five-eyes-wide check compares face width with five eye widths, reflecting the horizontal-fifths tradition of dividing the face into five roughly equal columns.
Each ratio score is easy to read on its own: 100 percent means the entered ratio exactly matches the canon, and the score falls proportionally as the measured ratio moves away from the ideal. The aggregate harmony score is only a rough composite of the three; it is not a ranked judgment and it tells you nothing about a face’s symmetry, health, or attractiveness beyond these three horizontal relationships.
Measurement tips and related tools
Use a straight-on image, a neutral expression, a relaxed jaw, and consistent landmark choices. The distance between the eyes is between the inner corners of the eyes, not across both eyes. One eye width is a single eye opening, measured from the inner to the outer corner. Nose width is the widest point of the nose, mouth width is between the corners of the mouth, and face width is across the cheekbones. Avoid a close wide-angle selfie, which can enlarge the nose and distort width relationships, and measure from the same photo when comparing alternatives.

Edge cases and limitations
The calculator rejects zero or negative measurements. It does not correct for asymmetry between the left and right sides, and it cannot tell whether the hairline or face outline is measured consistently. The interocular input is the distance between the eyes, not the width of both eyes combined; the eye-width input is one eye. The mouth-to-nose check uses mouth width divided by nose width, not the other way around.
The neoclassical canons are historical design conventions, not scientific beauty standards. The study that tested them against measured young adult faces found that only a minority matched any given canon, and later work found that conformity varies substantially across populations. Attractiveness itself is multifactorial and culturally variable. A low score means only that the entered measurements differ from three specific historical rules; it says nothing about health, value, or attractiveness, and the tool should be interpreted as entertainment and design exploration.
