Eye Spacing Ratio Calculator
The eye spacing ratio calculator compares the distance between your eyes with your eye width, using a ratio where 1.00 means the gap between the inner corners of the eyes equals one eye width. Some sources phrase the same idea as the eye space ratio or the one-eye-width rule. A second check compares the gap with face width against the five-eyes-wide convention. Both rules come from classical portrait drawing and anthropometry, and both are aesthetic conventions rather than scientific beauty tests.
Responsible interpretation first
A ratio can look precise without being meaningful. The one-eye-width and five-eyes-wide rules are construction aids that artists and anthropometrists have used to place facial features, not measurements that rank faces. Anthropometric studies show that real faces vary widely and that such canons fit some individuals but not average populations. Use this calculator for curiosity, portrait drawing, or design discussion; do not use it to judge anyone, including yourself.
How it works
The calculator takes three positive measurements in the same unit. Interocular distance is the gap between the inner corners of the eyes, measured from the inner corner of one eye to the inner corner of the other. It is not the width of both eyes combined. One eye width is the horizontal opening of a single eye, from its inner corner to its outer corner. Face width is the width of the face at eye level.
The one-eye-width rule is a classical portrait and neoclassical anthropometric convention that the gap between the eyes should be about one eye width, so the ideal ratio is 1.00. The five-eyes-wide rule extends that idea horizontally: the face at eye level is traditionally divided into five approximate eye widths, two for the eyes, one for the gap between them, and one for each side margin. Because the interocular gap is one of those five parts, the ideal interocular-to-face-width ratio is 1 divided by 5, or 0.20.
Formula
Both formulas are unit-free: any unit works as long as all three measurements use the same one.
Worked example
Use the default measurements from the calculator: an interocular distance of 3.2, an eye width of 2, and a face width of 11.1, all in the same unit. The eye spacing ratio is 3.2 divided by 2, which is 1.60, well above the one-eye-width ideal of 1.00. The interocular-to-face ratio is 3.2 divided by 11.1, which is about 0.29, above the five-eyes-wide ideal of 0.20. Both checks agree: the eyes are set wider apart than the classical canons suggest.
Measurement tips
Take a straight-on photo with the camera at eye level and the face filling the frame, with a neutral expression. Mark the inner corner of each eye and the outer corner of the eye you measure as consistently as you can, because landmark choice is the largest source of error. Measure from the same photo when comparing alternatives; mixing mirror measurements, printed photos, and phone screenshots invites inconsistency. Avoid a close wide-angle selfie, which can distort width relationships near the edges of the frame.
Limitations
This is an aesthetic novelty, not a medical or scientific beauty assessment. The one-eye-width and five-eyes-wide rules are culturally and historically variable conventions: Farkas and colleagues found that such neoclassical canons fit only some of the faces they measured, and studies of golden-ratio facial masks report poor fits across populations. The calculator is not a diagnosis of any kind and says nothing about health, vision, or identity. Head tilt, lens distortion, expression, and makeup can all change the measurements and the result.
