Pizza Calculator vs Experimental Pizza Baking Model
Two pizza tools on this site answer different questions about the same food. The pizza calculator is about choosing and buying: it compares two pizzas by value and estimates how many pizzas a group needs. The experimental pizza baking model is about baking: it estimates how long a homemade pizza takes in the oven from heat style, crust thickness, and dough temperature. What each calculator does
The Pizza Calculator has two modes. Value mode treats each pizza as a circle: area is pi times the radius squared, cost per square inch is price divided by area, and the pizza with the lower unit cost is labeled the better value, with the percentage advantage shown. Because area grows with the square of diameter, a 16 inch pizza has roughly 78 percent more area than a 12 inch pizza. Party mode multiplies guests by slices per person — light 2, medium 3, heavy 4 — divides by the selected size’s slice count (small 10 inch has 6 slices, medium 12 inch 8, large 14 inch 10, extra large 16 inch 12), and rounds up to whole pizzas.
The Experimental Pizza Baking Model estimates baking time from oven type, dough thickness (0.1 to 5 centimeters), and dough temperature. Wood-fired mode uses a recommended oven temperature of 330 degrees Celsius and one set of equation constants; electric mode uses 230 degrees Celsius and different constants. The base baking time comes from a formula in thickness and the constants, then dough temperature adjusts it by 3 percent per degree above or below 20 degrees Celsius, clamped so the adjustment can add at most 50 percent or subtract at most 25 percent. The final baking time is rounded to a whole minute and floored at 1 minute. It also reports a modeled bottom temperature and Fahrenheit conversions.

When to use which
Use the pizza calculator when the decision is about buying: which of two sizes on the menu gives more pizza per dollar, or how many pizzas to order for a group. Compare cost per square inch rather than sticker prices, and remember the page’s caveats — a cheaper plain pie is not automatically the right choice if toppings, crust style, delivery fees, or dietary needs matter more, and a shop that cuts slices differently changes the party math. The party mode does not add a buffer for varied appetites despite its result note, so round up if your group skews hungry.
Use the experimental pizza baking model when you are making pizza at home and need a starting time in the oven. The number is a first check, not a guarantee: stone preheat, oven cycling, sauce moisture, cheese quantity, pan color, and flour all change real baking, so start checking early and judge by browned edges, melted cheese, and a firm underside. Cold dough adds time (up to 50 percent), warm dough subtracts it (up to 25 percent), and a very thick crust lengthens the estimate — but overproofed dough may bake poorly even when the math says faster.
