What each calculator does
The gardening frost date calculator takes a USDA-style hardiness zone, a last spring frost date, a first fall frost date, and crop switches, then counts the frost-free season and applies crop offsets. Frost-free days is the difference between the two dates: with last frost May 15 and first frost October 15 that is 153 days. Each crop contributes planning values — cold-hardy peas and spinach are planted six weeks before the last frost, tomatoes and peppers on the last frost date, and each crop’s days to maturity sets the harvest window. The zone is shown for context but does not drive the schedule: hardiness zones describe average annual extreme minimum winter temperature, while frost dates describe seasonal timing.
The plant light requirements calculator converts a measured photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) in µmol/m²/s and a photoperiod in hours per day into daily light integral (DLI): DLI = PPFD × photoperiod × 3,600 ÷ 1,000,000, displayed to two decimal places. At 300 µmol/m²/s over 12 hours that is 12.96 mol/m²/day. The single-value method treats the entered PPFD as constant across the photoperiod, and the calculator deliberately makes no lux-to-PPFD conversion, species requirement, or lighting recommendation.

When to use which
Use the frost date calculator when you are planning the calendar: when to start tomatoes indoors (in the worked example, eight weeks before the last frost, March 20), when to plant outside, whether a crop’s maturity fits the frost-free window, and whether cold frames or row covers extend the season. Treat the dates as planning anchors, then check soil temperature and current frost and freeze warnings.
Use the plant light calculator when you need to know whether a light setup delivers enough daily light for seedlings started under that calendar: measure PPFD with a quantum sensor (or use a documented value), enter the photoperiod your lights run, and compare the DLI across scenarios. The two tools are complements — the frost date tells you the seed-starting window, and plant light tells you whether the seedlings in that window get enough light.
Limits and disclaimer
Both pages are educational planning tools. Frost dates are climate averages, not forecasts — individual years, microclimates, and current NWS warnings govern final decisions — and the calculator’s squash and corn offsets appear reversed for heat-loving crops, so treat those dates cautiously. The plant light calculator assumes a constant PPFD across the photoperiod and provides no species targets, sufficiency categories, or lighting recommendations; sensor placement, calibration, and spectrum limit how representative one reading is. Neither page is a substitute for current weather guidance or plant-specific growing advice.
