This calculator converts cubic yards to US short tons by multiplying by a density that you enter. It does not assign a material or claim a universal density. Density can change with composition, temperature, moisture, compaction, and measurement method, so use a value that applies to the same material condition as the measured volume.

Method

US short tons=volume in yd3×density in short tons/yd3\text{US short tons} = \text{volume in yd}^3 \times \text{density in short tons/yd}^3

The units cancel dimensionally: yd³ × short tons/yd³ = short tons. The result panel also reports related units: pounds = short tons × 2,000; metric tonnes = short tons × 0.90718474.

Example

With 10 yd³ and an entered density of 1.4 short tons/yd³:

10×1.4=14 short tons10 \times 1.4 = 14 \text{ short tons}

The starting density is only an editable example. It is not evidence that any named material has that density.
