Concentration can be expressed several ways, and two of the most common are amount per volume and parts per million. The molarity calculator reports how much solute is present as an amount of substance in a known final volume. The ppm calculator reports how many parts of one component exist for every million total parts on the same basis. Both pages are explicit about their assumptions because the two expressions are easy to confuse in lab notes, water-quality reports, and product specifications.

What each calculator does

The molarity calculator divides moles of solute by the final solution volume in liters and reports the result as M, meaning moles per liter. Moles must be finite and nonnegative, and volume must be greater than zero, with both capped at one million. The page does not convert milliliters, grams, equivalents, or mass percent: 250 mL must be entered as 0.250 L, and grams must be converted to moles with a molar mass first. The volume is the final solution volume, not the solvent poured in before mixing.

The ppm calculator divides a part quantity by a total quantity and reports the same fraction as ppm, percent, parts per billion, per mille, and a decimal fraction. The part and total must be like-for-like quantities — mass divided by total mass, volume divided by total volume, or a count divided by a total count. It does not infer density or turn a mass-per-volume value into ppm on its own.

When to use which

Use the molarity calculator when you are preparing or describing a solution by amount of substance: a buffer recipe that requires 0.100 M acid, a titration using 0.0500 M sodium hydroxide, or a cell culture protocol that specifies millimolar salt concentrations. Molarity is the standard scale for these because the mole is the amount unit and the final solution volume is defined.

Use the ppm calculator when the concentration is a very small like-for-like ratio: a contaminant at a few parts per million in a sample, an impurity level reported against a total mass or total volume, or any dilute fraction where a percentage would carry several leading zeros. State the basis with the result — ppm by mass, ppm by volume, or ppm as a count ratio — because the number alone is ambiguous.
