Gross margin and EBITDA margin both measure profitability as a percentage of revenue, but they stop at different layers of the income statement. Gross margin subtracts only cost of goods sold, isolating the economics of producing or delivering each sale. EBITDA margin subtracts operating expenses as well — and then adds back depreciation and amortization — so it describes operating profitability before financing, tax, and long-lived-asset accounting choices. Neither is the bottom line, and the gap between them is where overhead costs live.
What each calculator does
The gross margin calculator takes revenue, cost of goods sold, and an optional operating-expense figure. It reports gross profit, gross margin percentage, COGS ratio, and — when operating expenses are entered — the amount left after those expenses and gross profit divided by overhead. It validates that revenue is positive and that COGS and operating expenses are not negative. Because it stops after direct costs, the page is aimed at product-line, channel, and pricing questions.
The EBITDA margin calculator takes total revenue and EBITDA, plus an optional industry benchmark. It reports EBITDA divided by revenue as a percentage, EBITDA per 100 dollars of revenue, and the gap between the computed margin and the benchmark you enter. It rejects zero or negative revenue. Its focus is comparing operating conversion across businesses with different debt loads, tax rates, depreciation schedules, or acquisition histories — the margin itself is entered, not derived from an income statement.

When to use which
Use the gross margin calculator when the question is about a product, service package, or channel: pricing power, purchasing, fulfillment, discounting, or mix. Its unique step is separating the direct-cost margin from overhead, so it shows whether a product line contributes enough before period costs are considered.
Use the EBITDA margin calculator when the question is about the whole company’s operating conversion — how many dollars of EBITDA come from every 100 dollars of sales — and when you want to compare against a peer median, lender covenant target, or plan benchmark. It is the tool to pair with valuation multiples, because the margin describes operating efficiency while the multiple describes how the market prices that efficiency.
The two margins can diverge for instructive reasons. A business with strong gross margin and a weak EBITDA margin has an overhead problem — operating expenses are consuming what product economics generated. A business with similar margins at both layers runs lean overhead. Comparing the two percentages is itself the diagnosis: the gap is the operating-expense burden expressed as a share of revenue.
Limits and disclaimer
Both pages are educational tools, not accounting advice or valuations. Gross margin depends on judgment about what belongs in COGS, and EBITDA margin depends on the quality of any EBITDA adjustments — and neither is free cash flow. Gross margin ignores overhead, interest, and taxes; EBITDA margin ignores capital expenditures, working capital, cash taxes, and debt service. Use consistent periods and consistent definitions when comparing, and do not base financing or acquisition decisions on a single ratio.
