Salary to Hourly Calculator

The salary to hourly calculator turns an annual salary into the hourly wage it represents. Enter your gross salary, hours per week, and paid weeks per year to see the equivalent hourly, monthly, weekly, and daily pay. It is useful when comparing a salaried job with an hourly offer, checking freelance targets, or putting a promotion into everyday pay terms.

How to use

Enter the annual salary before taxes and payroll deductions. Next, enter the number of hours you usually work each week. If your schedule is consistent, use the contracted number of hours. If your workload changes, use a realistic average rather than the best week or worst week. Finally, enter the number of paid weeks in the year. A year-round employee with paid vacation usually uses 52; a seasonal worker or contractor with unpaid gaps should use fewer weeks.

The work days field is used for the daily equivalent. Five work days per week is common, but four-day schedules, rotating shifts, and six-day workweeks should be entered directly so the daily figure matches your routine.

How it works

The calculator finds your yearly paid hours by multiplying hours per week by weeks worked per year. It then divides annual salary by those paid hours. Monthly pay is simply annual salary divided by 12, while weekly pay divides salary by the paid weeks you entered. Daily pay divides the weekly amount by work days per week.

This conversion is especially helpful when job ads use different pay styles. A salary can look large as an annual number but less impressive if it requires long weeks. An hourly offer can look modest but become competitive when overtime, shift premiums, or fewer required hours are included. For the reverse calculation, use the annual salary calculator. To plan the result inside a household spending plan, try the budget calculator, or compare long-term savings growth with the compound interest calculator.

Formula

Start by finding paid hours per year:

yearly hours=hours per week×weeks per year\text{yearly hours} = \text{hours per week} \times \text{weeks per year}

Then divide salary by those hours:

hourly wage=annual salaryyearly hours\text{hourly wage} = \frac{\text{annual salary}}{\text{yearly hours}}

The supporting equivalents are:

monthly pay=annual salary12\text{monthly pay} = \frac{\text{annual salary}}{12}

weekly pay=annual salaryweeks per year\text{weekly pay} = \frac{\text{annual salary}}{\text{weeks per year}}

daily pay=weekly paywork days per week\text{daily pay} = \frac{\text{weekly pay}}{\text{work days per week}}

Common mistakes/tips

Do not compare a salary to an hourly job until the hours are on equal footing. A $75,000 salary at 50 hours per week is a different hourly value than the same salary at 37.5 hours. Include paid time off in weeks worked only when pay continues during that time. If bonuses are reliable and contractual, you may add them to annual salary; if they are uncertain, keep them separate and compare base pay first. Also remember that salaried and hourly jobs can follow different overtime rules, so the effective hourly rate is only one part of the decision.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert salary to hourly pay?
Divide annual salary by total paid hours in the year. Total paid hours equals hours per week multiplied by weeks worked per year.
What hourly rate is a $60,000 salary?
At 40 hours per week and 52 paid weeks per year, a $60,000 salary is about $28.85 per hour before taxes.
Should paid time off count in weeks worked?
If you are paid during time off, include those weeks. If breaks are unpaid, reduce the weeks worked field to match the paid portion of the year.
Is hourly pay better than salary?
Neither is automatically better. Hourly roles may pay overtime, while salaried roles may include steadier pay, benefits, bonuses, or more flexibility. Compare total compensation.
Does this include taxes?
No. The calculator converts gross salary before deductions. Use net pay or paycheck tools when you need after-tax estimates.
